Album Review

Are they prog metal or are they goth metal? Certainly a fitting question for the Dutch group Autumn and their 2009 offering, Altitude. Their fourth album overall marks the arrival of a new singer, Marjan Welman (who replaces longtime frontwoman Nienke de Jong), but fans shouldn't worry, as Autumn still manage to embrace elements of both aforementioned metallic subgenres. And while there is quite a bit of crunchy metal heard throughout the release (especially "Skydancer"), there is also quite a lot of melody throughout — especially detected in Welman's vocals — as heard on such tracks as "Liquid Under Film Noir." If you're looking for smartly penned melodic metal (which manages to sound unlike most of the other modern-day metal bands mining similar sonic terrain), Autumn's Altitude would be a wise purchase.

Surprisingly Awesome

I was a little unsure about this group at first, but after reading the other reviews and listening to the samples, I thought I would give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. Great guitar, vocals and lyrics. I really enjoy listening to the ENTIRE album and that's a rarity for most of the groups I come across.

Skeptical at first...then blown away after purchasing.. Beautiful Music and Lyrics..

When I listened to the samples I thought Autumn was a Lacuna Coil wanna be band. I went ahead and purchased the album and I was proven wrong to a certain degree. The album has the heavy feel as with Lacuna Coil with a big emphasis on the bass guitar and also has great production value. The songs are loud and have a metal feel and the female vocalist is pretty good, not great, but the great music makes the album worth it. I only wish they had some male vocals as with Nightwish and Lacuna coil to balance things out. A solid album that deserves attention from the metal/heavy rock crowds.

Just Awesome

I had never listened to this band before I bought the album, just the previews, but I was intrigued. Powerful guitar combined with impressive vocals make this album one you should definetly buy. Like 10 Years, Autumn seems to focus on intelligent lyrics and melody instead of raw power, which is a comforting change from other Numetal bands. I'm really glad I made the purchase, and if you are a fan of lighter metal that still packs a guitar and bass punch, you will too.
