iTunes Review

With the addition of pedal steel guitarist and Dobro player Kitt Ketterman providing prominent instrumental accompaniment, Ben Kweller explores the rustic origins of country music. In the past, Kweller has alluded to these Americana influences, but from the opening notes of "Gypsy Rose," it's obvious that he intends to dig deep. Changing Horses reminds one of Bob Dylan's John Wesley Harding album with its minimalist backing band coming across like a tight-knit ensemble set up in the living room. The sweet flow of "Old Hat" has the warm intimacy of Ray LaMontagne matched with the historical sweep of Ryan Adams' neo-traditionalist songwriting as Kweller sings in his gentlest tones. "Wantin’ Her Again" and "Things I Like to Do" fulfill their country rock ambitions, while "On Her Own" and "Homeward Bound" chase the ghost of the Rolling Stones at their most C&W. "Sawdust Man" steps up the groove for a jamboree feel, but Kweller prefers the slow, mournful trickle of a train leaving the station with just a sweeping pedal steel guitar for the ride home.

Texas twang

I love this album so much. I like it better than his other albums, which is saying something considering I about wore his self-titled album out listening to it. I just have to put it on and close my eyes to picture the Texas road and sky, the Austin skyline on the horizon, and feel gentle heat from the sun on my skin. I'd play it now, but I'm five thousand miles from home and I think it would make me too homesick.

Not to say this is a particularly poignant album, but it is, through and through, a Texas album. I particularly recommend "On Her Own," "Ballad of Wendy Baker," "Fight," and "Wantin' Her Again."

Ben keeps growing!

I've seen him twice and this last time was for the CH tour and I'm so glad I went as the songs become much more
meaningful after hearing them live. I actaully think I like this one bestter than On My Way. Either way you look at it, BK is a great artist doing the Beck/Neil Young/Beatles/Bowie thing by not looking backwards but still writing quality stuff! And anyone who thinks it's not hook filled isn't listening!

Love it!!!!
