Album Review
Super slick production values are the highlight of this debut album featuring a trio of brothers. The music is upbeat, pop in sound with clean lyrics. About half of the songs focus on the gospel, the other half are pure pop. While the lyrics seem above board, the production is so slick that sometimes the voices are lost in the mix, literally. For the CCM fan who likes that sort of thing, this album will be enjoyable. ~ Dacia A. Blodgett-Williams, All Music Guide

Catchy and Upbeat
by WarrenzinhoI need to preface this with the fact that I don't write reviews or normally buy music on itunes but for this one I'm making an exception! This is the type of music that gets me to move and I had to take advantage of the fact that Jake is not a household name, yet. He has a mix of Mraz and Mayer, but he brings his own soul and excitement that makes it his own.
A Playful, Soulful, Powerful Debut
by E GoelzIn his debut EP, Jake O'Neal uses top-notch production values to create three tunes as varied and complex as they are catchy and emotional. From the simple, soulful opening of "Lost Shoes" to the straightforward anthem "When You Called", and on through to the multilayered climax of "Courage", O'Neals EP spins a web of colliding genres that at once reminds the listener of their favorite music, while still maintaining an identity that's all its own.
"Lost Shoes" is a great opener, setting the standard of catchy beats and smooth vocals that will dominate the rest of the album. Throughout this track and the thoughtful "When You Called", the listener, depending on their age and experience, will be reminded of Ben Folds, or perhaps the Beach Boys-two popular bands who made a name for themselves through brilliant instrumental work and simple yet excellent songwriting. These two tracks, as fantastic as they may be, are followed by what I consider one of the best songs I've heard released in the past year. "Courage" is a heart-wrenching account of old fashioned discipline gone too far as seen through the eyes of both parent and child. The depth of feelings on display here are enough to make any listener feel the pain between the song's narrators. Aside from the lyrics, the song is a masterful arrangement of guitar-and piano-driven rock, punctuated by a bridge that explodes with color and sound. This bridge also serves as the song's closing, and is a fitting end to a brilliant debut.
In short, Jake. is a wonderful album that should not be passed up by anyone with ears and a taste for good, fun, moving music. Based on what I've heard, both in this EP and a few songs released prior to this (please give us "Awkward Boy" again-we need it!), Jake O'Neal is destined for greatness. Do yourself a favor and be among the first to hop on the train.
