iTunes Review

Recorded in a home studio that occupied the same L.A. hillside residence where the infamous Sharon Tate murders were executed by the Manson family, The Downward Spiral (Nine Inch Nails' second album) is one of the Goth-Industrial Complex’s most formidable achievements. It's rich in sonic color and devastating in its use of dynamics. The dark, sexually charged “Closer” quickly became NIN’s resilient breakthrough hit, while “March of the Pigs” underscored Reznor’s unlikely pop sensibility. The ‘Deluxe Edition’ improves the dynamics and overall sound, but is most welcomed for its generous addition of bonus material.  Two Joy Division covers (“A Violet Fluid,” “Dead Souls”), a Soft Cell cover (“All the Pigs, All Lined Up”), early alternate versions and demos of familiar tunes (“Hurt (Quiet),” “Ruiner,” “Liar,” “Heresy”) and cuts from various soundtracks (“Burn” from Natural Born Killers) all paint a better picture of the mid-90s era when Reznor was restructuring the influence and musical reach of this previously difficult-to-access genre. Reznor broke down the resistant barriers without compromising industrial music’s inherent ferocity and impact.

Where's Ghosts I-IV?

I love NIN, and this album, but I am frustrated that iTunes has not included Ghosts in their catalog. Click yes if you want to see NIN's great instrumental album on iTunes!

GREAT, GREAT ALBUM!!!

This album is, in a word, amazing. Not to put the other albums down, I think they are all equally amazing. I would suggest listening to some of the newer albums first, get to know those those first, then get this, or The Fragile, or Pretty Hate Machine. There is no such thing as a bad NIN song.

Industrial Rock Classic

by GrilledUp

Industrial rock saw it's first mainstream peak in 1994 with this album. This is gonna be "the genre" for the 2010s and beyond due to growing technology. Call this album future rock, or simple techno, it's a classic that could be released 20 years from now and still be as successful as it is.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Nine Inch Nails were the most popular industrial group ever and were largely responsible for bringing the music to a mass audience. It isn't really accurate to call NIN a group; the only official member is singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor, who always remained solely responsible for...
