by Brainiac...Or Not?As a fan of Amanda on the show, I was glad to see that homegirl had made an album, but actually pretty shocked to hear just how great it is.
How did she do it? How did she write the songs, arrange them, get a band and producer and label, and make something of this quality without even cracking the Top 10? The only answer I can think of is that she is extremely blessed and talented, one of the best musicians working the scene today.
Listen to the lyrics--they're not banal or cliched, but elegantly (and sometimes hilariously) strung together out of the mind of a very gifted lady.
Listen to "Iroquois Lane" - it's an immediate classic, and reminds you of half a dozen recognized classic rock songs while still being original and quite haunting. Listen to "Pray" - beautifully composed, with its pure, glorious Johnny Cash bass lines and simplicity. Listen to "Play On" and "Fail to Compromise" and "Let's Take It Outside" - they'll be stuck in your head; fair warning!
Interestingly, on the show she stayed away from slow numbers, and yet she digs into them here. "Play On," "Lay It Down," "A Long Time," and "Pray" showcase her versatility to perfection, and believe me, there ain't no Autotune here. She sings with grace and nuance and tenderness; it really is amazing.
And what really makes the album so consistently listenable to me is her voice. I know some people don't like it. But, some people are just born with raspy voices. And the fact that they can still hit the notes, sing with strength, and stay in tune perhaps makes them even better than those born with pristine voices. Amanda has it going on. I don't care what anyone says to the contrary, she has a spectacular set of pipes.
I'm pretty much playing this album every time I pick up my pod, for all the reasons I've mentioned here and many more. Amanda Overmyer deserves respect, she deserves to be remembered truthfully, and she deserves recognition, airplay, and butts in the seats. I hope to see her live one day, I hope to meet her for just a few seconds and let her know that at least one more person in the world realizes how awesome she is.
