iTunes Review

Bat for Lashes’ debut, Fur and Gold, catapulted British singer Natasha Khan to indie rock glory. Her brand of airy, fragile trilling and lush, sparkling piano and strings so enraptured critics and fans alike that she wisely stayed the course on Two Suns, this time adding a faint dusting of other musical flavors beyond the Kate Bush/Tori Amos school of Diva Dramaturgy. “Sleep Alone” starts with a lone, thrumming guitar string, the arrangement and Khan’s voice conjuring the classic folk sounds of Fairport Convention, before ghostly drums and rattling percussion carry it off to another world; a gospel choir lifts the dark “Peace of Mind” into a spiritual realm, and tribal poly rhythms drive “Two Planets” into a swirling, global kaleidoscope. There’s even a touch of Brechtian theatrics in “The Big Sleep,” with a cameo by the enigmatic Scott Walker.  “Moon and Moon” and the single, “Daniel,” are heartbreakingly beautiful, both tracks pining for something that has vanished (one a real love, and another that is fictional).  When Khan sings, “I’m one of two planets dancing...,” one doesn’t stop to ponder whether it can be true. One simply goes along for the ride.

I Could Talk Forever About This Album

Track-By-Track

Glass (9/10)- The dramatic opener to the album with roaring low notes and screaming high notes that showcases Natasha's impressive range. The strong drums in this song made it a very enjoyable listen for me. Just her voice also makes anything a work of art it seems.

Sleep Alone (9/10)- This is this song I dance around to and belt out when no one else is around. It's an 80's style dance-y song that is very different from anything Natasha has done before. Her poppiest song by far. Not to say that's a bad thing. This song is extremely catchy and will be in your head for days!

Moon and Moon (10/10)- This song... where do I begin? Just listen once and you will understand its immense beauty. It is a heartbreaking song that has a brilliant piano line and Natasha again sings just as great as ever. There is just such a strong emotion this song casts on you, it is unbelievable. It almost seems like the song should never end.

Daniel (9/10)- This is a really good song but I do prefer the video version over this one although there is not all too much difference. Anyway, this song is another poppy song that will have you dancing in your car/ chair/ room. It somehow combines a spooky and dark theme with a light and bouncy theme to create something truly magical.

Peace of Mind (9/10)- So terribly underrated! I really like this song because to me its like this mountain climbing expedition sort of thing where the song starts off simple and grows and grows as the song continues which is one of my favorite things to see in a song. It is kind of its own style and I couldn't classify it into any one genre. I like that there is a choir that joins Natasha adding to the growth I mentioned before.

Siren Song (10/10)- Possibly the greatest song I have ever heard. Please, I beg you listen to this more than once after you hear it! After about three times of listening to it (at least for me) the song starts to come together and you realize the beauty of it. I love how the verses are these quiet piano pieces and then the chorus is this hurrican that invades the world but some element seems to hold the song together like glue. I don't think I have ever heard a song quite like this and this song alone to me is worth the whole cost of the album. The lyrics are amazing and heartbreaking and the emotion she delivers in her voice is enough to make you cry, especially at the very end when she says "it won't be long until you're running". You might even say the song is perfect. Not a thing I would change in this song. Maybe it is the perfect song we've searched for for so long! I want to see a music video for this, but at the same time I don't because it might ruin the picture I already get painted into my head whenever I listen. I could go on forever about this song so I'll just stop now before I type five pages.

Pearl's Dream (9/10)- It has to be a good song if it is going to be the follow up to Siren Song, which fortunately this is. It is another of the poppy songs (which strangely all ended up being singles) with a dancy beat that begins after the first chorus. The part of the song near the end where Natasha sings "You know that it's time to go up." is my favortie part, but overall it is a very good song.

Good Love (9/10)- This song is pretty addictive somehow. It reminds me a bit of a slower What's A Girl To Do? as it has a part with Natasha chanting rather than singing. I don't know what's up with the piano but it sounds so fuzzy and warm and I think of it as purple for whatever reason but it is really cool.

Two Planets (9/10)- Something about this song is really interesting to me, but I couldn't tell you what because I don't know. I like that it has this giant drum beat going on and Natasha's voice seems to echo at parts, which I really liked hearing. This song almost feels like a journey the way it grows from start to finish.

Travelling Woman (10/10)- This is another one of my favorites. The piano here is again very hypnotic and this song almost puts you in a trance. I dind't like it all too much at first, but it grew on me a lot. Her voice here is spectacular and I just love the dramatic pause it the middle of the song. It just feels so suspenseful everytime you listen to the song!

The Big Sleep (8/10)- This song is creepy! It seems like haunted elevator music or something and it sounds like a metaphor comparing the end of a show to death. Or just death. The best part of the song is her final line of the song she sings. It is so high up it just gives me chills. I feel like the song could have cut short a bit earlier and it dragged on a bit too long. It should have just ended for me at 2:27. The noises at the end are too scary. Its like some robotic heart beating and bleh it's just so creepy! I think I just don't like the extreme creepy factor of the song.

Wilderness (N/A)- Haven't heard the song as I bought a hard copy but what I've hear of it sound amazing and I think it would be a favorite of mine!

All in all, this is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard and I highly recommend it, especially Siren Song.
Thank you.

do I like it,or do I not?HHHHMMMMM...

I'm not a big fan of this band(I just heard of it,)but I really like "Sleep Alone" because it was on the Vampire Diaries,Season 1,Episode-Haunted.The song has a GREAT beat and it's very catchy!
By the way,I have a question,what does indie mean?Does it mean she's goth?I'm confused!!!!!

Like a daydream...

If you liked Fur and Gold, Two Suns will blow you away. I don't even know how to describe this music... you really need to hear it to understand. It's haunting, dream-like, and mysterious, but in the best way possible. The album as a whole is very cohesive, and tells a story as it progresses. Really quite a masterpiece.

I saw Bat for Lashes live at Webster Hall over the summer, and fell in love with the music even more. Natasha Khan was amazing. She was beautiful, really sweet, refreshingly modest, and her outfit was incredible (she came out barefoot, wearing a skin-tight jumpsuit and long faux fur sleeves resembling wings). Just wow.
