iTunes Review
It wasn’t Mikel Jollett’s job as a music critic that inspired him to start making his own music so much as it was a grip of adversity; in one week his girlfriend dumped him, his mom found out she had cancer and he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that caused him spot baldness and skin depigmentation. The Airborne Toxic Event was born as Jollett’s cathartic vehicle. The quintet’s self-titled debut rocks with catchy song hooks and a commercial alternative radio familiarity that’s sure to hit home with fans of Joy Division, Interpol, The Strokes and Arcade fire – though opening cut “Wishing Well” has Jollett’s impassioned inflections sounding uncannily similar to Conor Oberst, replete with a quivering timbre and impressive literary lyrics. And it sounds again like there's a different singer on “Papillon” where Jollett downshifts from tenor to baritone with shaky Ian Curtis modulations. “Sometime Around Midnight” is a standout with lush strings leading into electric guitars and Jollett settling into his own unaffected voice.

I'm in love
by dancer5686I have been listening to this cd constantly for about three months now and still love it. I just saw the band last night in SF and they are even better live! They are some of the most pasionate and genuine performers I have seen.
Honest, Heart-felt Music with a Kick
by tinkthespikeI found this band by accident in January when I was flipping through stations and they were performing "Sometime Around Midnight" on Letterman. I sat, enthralled, until it was over, and then I immediately got the CD. I've been a fan ever since and have turned on my friends to their music. I have seen them live twice -- most recently last night in Atlanta -- and I can say with 100 percent confidence they sound just as good live as they do on the album. Actually, sometimes they sound better because they put in little improvs that really make their shows unique. The members of this band are in it for the music and I can clearly hear that each time I listen to one of their songs. From the aching "Sometime Around Midnight" to the frentic "Gasoline," the slow build-up from the violin to the entire band in "Innocence" and the hopeful "Wishing Well," this is a band that plays honest, heart-felt tunes but still reminds you with a kick to your ears when you least expect it that they are a rock band. I heard a few of their new songs and covers last night, and I can say I cannot wait for their follow-up.
