iTunes Review

Richard Swift is a multi-talented recording artist from Minnesota whose ambitions have sometimes made his music a bit too challenging. But his pop instincts come together for The Atlantic Ocean, a solid collection of jaunty piano-based numbers that are propelled with weightless rhythms and vocals that are nearly buried in spots, more the product of shyness than production overkill. The title track crackles with a spirited groove that suggests Swift learned much from early ‘70s AM radio and an interest in Tin Pan Alley that goes beyond simply emulating the chirpier points of Ben Folds Five. These eleven songs are clever and literate and filled with playful moments from the half-crooned falsetto that opens “The Original Thought” and continues with the twisting organ riff that surrounds the piano. “Ballad of Old What’s His Name” rocks harder than anything with “ballad” in its title should. “Already Gone” uses various production tricks to achieve its intimacy. The vocals swirl past in loose pieces while notes are coo-ed and hummed and phrases are blended in powerful harmony.

4/18/09 ~ At practically the last minute I opted to join some friends for a show last night here in Seattle. Mr. Swift and his band were the second of three bands that played and, for me anyways, were by far the most enjoyable. I hadn't heard any of Mr. Swift's stuff so didn't know what to expect save the little bit my friends told me about but he and his band really impressed me. Everything seemed effortless and spot on and they seemed to be enjoying themselves which was a joy to watch. So I picked up this album after the show. I'm very glad I did.

To be honest, I don't usually go in for "indyalternarock" so much but Mr. Swift's music transcends any simple classification or category. There's a LOT going on in there! Late 50's pop by way of garage a la ragtime via synth & piano with perhaps some blues and maybe even a dash of funk thrown in for good measure. Sounds like a whole record store doesn't it? :) But seriously, this album is well-crafted & well produced. I hear more with each listen and it's really growing on me. Original & different yet somehow familiar. Well done Mr. Swift!

I'm so glad I didn't stay home last night.

Singer/songwriter Richard Swift's lo-fi, sepia-tone style harks back to the Tin Pan Alley age. Born in 1977, the California native spent his youth locked in his room with a four-track recorder, a device that — along with a computer — the artist continues to utilize to this day. Influenced...
