iTunes Review

Here as always vocalist/pianist/songwriter Tori Amos presents her singular creative voice with impressive attention to lyrical narrative. The lead off single, “Welcome to England,” presents a nervous-sounding instrumental backing and electronic beats on the verse and resolution in the form of a comforting, synth pad-laden chorus. “Not Dying Today” has a clean, classic rock shuffle sound as realized by a full band, while those craving some solo Amos will enjoy “Mary Jane,” her piano-and-voice tale of a mother and her coming-of-age son. All instruments come together in a shimmering chamber-type gathering for “Flavor” — ghostly guitar, sparse piano, and pensive bass, anchored by Amos’ searching voice. “Fire to Your Plain” has both a swagger and a syncopation that her fans have come to love, while “Ophelia” highlights her elegant piano work and gift for self-accompaniment.

It's Called Artistic Experimentation Folks!

by Litebrownboy

I was first introduced to Tori Amos in the summer of 1996 as a 14 year old. Visiting my Father in Indiana, his girlfriend brought me to a Tori concert as her friend couldn't make it. Tori was touring her "Boys For Pele" album and the half full theater had 400 seats.

I was blown away and have seen every one of her tours since. I own every album she's ever released (including the tucked away "Y Kant Tori Read" album that is AMAZING and "More Pink" which includes previously unreleased material from her "Under The Pink" recording sessions). She is a true novice who sticks to her artistic vision despite record sales or expectations.

I find "Abnormally Attracted To Sin" to be vocally sweet and hypnotically somber... Is it her best? Probably not. But it IS original and does stick to a committed tone that questions one's urges and desires and what it means to succumb or sustain them. It's brilliant. Not everything is meant to be taken at face value. She took a risk here and created some great stuff. "Welcome To England," "500 Miles," "Maybe California," and the title track are well worth a listen. This album is loaded with subtext, and if you're a music snob then put your analytical "knowledge" to work and read between the lines. You'll find a load of hidden gems and might even enjoy yourself.

"Little Earthquakes" it is not, but deliciously attractive and sinful it may as well be.

Bravo Tori. You will always have a fan in me and your Atlanta show this past August in support of this record was spectacular!

Let's Pretend This Album Never Happened

by Le Grand Incendie

I'm a long-time Tori fan who has bought all of her albums, many singles, seen many concerts and have sung her praises for years. But this album is such a disappointment. As a fan, I have tried to enjoy this more than the album deserved, but it's just practically unlistenable. "Give", "Welcome to England", "Flavor", and "Curtain Call" are just about tolerable but really I wouldn't even recommend downloading any of those individual tracks. I think it's best to just pretend that this album never happened and hope that the next one is back to par.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos) was one of several female singer/songwriters who combined the stark lyrical attack of alternative rock with a distinctly '70s musical approach, creating music that fell between the orchestrated meditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics of Joni Mitchell.
