iTunes Review

Diverse in sound yet focused in message, this thought-provoking and emotionally resonant release is consistently strong. The overriding themes here are love and responsibility, framed in terms of romantic uncertainties (“Safe to Land,” “There Must Be a Light”) and spiritual yearnings (“Closer,” “Heaven,” “Forgive Me”). Singer/lyricist Dan Haseltine shows particular insight when grappling with complacency and alienation in tracks like “Headphones” and “Scenic Route.” If tunes like “Weapons” have a bleak cast, “Two Hands” and “Heart” are radiant with hope. Musically, the album often recalls the bittersweet folk-pop of the band’s initial albums while drawing upon an expanded palette of ‘80s-style synthesizer and guitar sounds. Big, chunky chords are contrasted with delicate vocal harmonies and keyboard filigree, lending intricate textures to tracks like “Boys (Lesson One)” and the instrumental “The Long Fall.” The Long Fall Back to Earth finds this reliably creative foursome rising to a higher plateau.

Unbelievable

I have seen myself in every single one of these songs, particularly "Heart" and "Don't Stop". I listen to this album every day.

Disappointing, with a few jewels

This is my first album I've purchased from this band, and therefore is the first true exposure I've had to this band. I've been told many things about them and needed to hear them for myself. With an open mind and ears attuned, I must say, I was very disappointed with what I experienced. While some songs ("Headphones" and "Boys (Lesson One)") were interestingly meaningful, most of the songs had no particular Christian point of view, perhaps because many songs seemed to have no particular view at all. Lyrics were unclear and interpretive. There seemed to be no energy or passion throughout the album, which provided for a very sedated and blurry listening experience. The rating you see actually comes from the album rating on my iTunes right now, which determined by averaging together the star ratings for each song. That should give you an idea of how much I liked each song - not very much at all. I would not suggest this album to a friend.

Jars of Clay were the breakout band of the so-called alternative CCM movement of the '90s, scoring an enormous mainstream hit with the debut single "Flood" and enjoying platinum sales. The group's lyrics may have been exclusively Christian, but their acoustic-oriented music fit perfectly into the folky...
