iTunes Review

For more than a decade, the Crystal Method has been making dance-floor dynamite that appeals to diehard techno heads, as well as adrenaline-chasing music lovers. The American duo has conquered raves, radio, and remixes, collaborating with everyone from Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello to the Roots-affiliated rapper Rahzel. On Divided By Night the party starts with the title track, a mid-tempo composition with shades of electro funk, and then we’re treated to “Dirty Thirty,” a dramatic, New Wave-influenced instrumental featuring New Order bassist Peter Hook. Metric’s ice-cold vocalist Emily Haines adds pop bliss to utopia-kissed “Come Back Clean,” while a similar, almost-ethereal vibe is evoked by Stefanie King Warfield on “Black Rainbow.” Hasidic rapper Matisyahu sparkles brightest on the synth-spiked tsunami “Drown In the Now” and proves musical collaborations can be greater than the some of it parts. Divided By Night illustrates Crystal Method’s willingness to continue challenging preconceived notions.

Awesome Album!

This is my personal favorite album by this group. There is always a record that a band has that captures a piece of every previous album, this is that cd for Crystal Method. True artists do not rehash, recycle or try and recreate their best selling release instead they do this, explore the path further, sonically and in the arrangements. The vocals on each song fit the actual "song" perfectly, it does not feel contrived. The vocals on Black Rainbows are beautiful and I've personally listened to that song repeatedly since I purchases the cd. I am into rock music and occasionaly some electro stuff like the Orb and Orbital so this release is right up my alley.... 5 Stars..

Excellent modern electro pop

I don't know why I listened to the haters on here and waited so long to pick up this album. I've been a fan of The Crystal Method since their first album, Vegas, over a decade ago. Yes, this is more pop and more vocal than any of their previous efforts, but do you really want to listen to the same stale material all over again, repackaged in a different beat? This album sounds fresh and modern and has a really nice variety of sounds, yet still retaining that trademark Crystal Method personality of full-bodied electro blips and pads, rock cadence, and energetic vibe. And there are still enough instrumental only tracks to give you that pure electronic fix.

A lot of my favorite old school electronic artists are going this pop/collaboration route right now, but I can't say any of them still retain their original flavor as clearly as CM does on this album. Highlights include the kinetic vocals on "Down In The Now", the smooth rocker "Slipstream", and a sweet and satisfying ballad "Falling Hard" to close the album. There aren't any significantly weak tracks in the bunch, although "Dirty Thirty" underutilizes Peter Hook.

Overall this album has loads of personality and yields a satisfying listen for electro pop/rock enthusiasts.

Biography

Formed: 1993 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Soundtrack

Years Active: '90s, '00s

L.A.'s Crystal Method have been referred to as America's answer to the Chemical Brothers. A dance-based electronic duo with a definite rock band feel, the comparison would seem appropriate, although it tends to erase what makes the group distinct: a solid base in American hip-hop, rock, soul, and pop....
