iTunes Review

In the few short years of their existence, Brooklyn's Grizzly Bear has taken their cavernous, whispery indie pop to the peaks of critical acclaim while stacking up a new set of building blocks as reference points. Vecktatimest continues the trajectory, working on a more epic level, but still providing a kind of hand-crafted, weird Americana feeling via their sparse arrangements and echoing, deep-in-the-basement feel. "All We Ask" is a triumph that has a stuttering, layered '50s pop rhythm but with vocal arrangements that are somewhere between an Eliot Smith heart-wringing folk song and a tropical outtake from South Pacific. It's the vocals that stand out the most, riding on top of the crashing cymbals on tracks like "Fine For Now" and hovering in the clouds on "Cheerleader." Veckatimest is an ornate collection of left-field pop music, at once familiar and curious, and also one of the sweetest, and more moving pop albums you're likely to hear.

Pure feeling. Its the first time i hear this band and im blown away. They are a contemporary spin on the beatles with new age melodies that break barriers.

As a professional musician and ravenous lover of jazz, classical, brazilian, rock, and pop music, I can say without hesitation that this is one of the finest albums in my collection. It's moving, both on a song-by-song basis as well as in terms of the entire album. The production suits the music fantastically: most of the album is pleasantly reverb-drenched, but not overly so. The compression is just right, and dynamics jump with a great balance. Performances are spot on and fit the songwriting perfectly... and the songwriting!

I don't want to dance about architecture too much, but... my. "Fine for Now," like much of the album, flawlessly juxtaposes delicacy and bombast. And... I can't go on picking out individual tracks. The whole album is amazing. Fantastically trippy vocal harmonies, drums that go from clear and articulate to walls of wash, depending on the moment, subtly psychedelic mellotron... incredible. Just incredible.

Grizzly Bear began as a home recording project for Boston-bred experimentalist Edward Droste, the son of an elementary school teacher, who laid the groundwork for the band's otherworldly debut album on a small hand-held tape recorder while holed up for 15 months in his Greenpoint, Brooklyn, apartment....
