Album Review

American Idiot was a rarity of the 21st century: a bona fide four-quadrant hit, earning critical and commercial respect, roping in new fans young and old alike. It was so big it turned Green Day into something it had never been before — respected, serious rockers, something they were never considered during their first flight of success with Dookie. Back then, they were clearly (and proudly) slacker rebels with a natural gift for a pop hook, but American Idiot was a big album with big ideas, a political rock opera in an era devoid of both protest rock and wild ambition, so its success was a surprise. It also ratcheted up high expectations for its successor, and Green Day consciously plays toward those expectations on 2009's 21st Century Breakdown, another political rock opera that isn't an explicit sequel but could easily be mistaken for one, especially as its narrative follows a young couple through the wilderness of modern urban America. Heady stuff, but like the best rock operas, the concept doesn't get in the way of the music, which is a bit of an accomplishment because 21st Century Breakdown leaves behind the punchy '60s Who fascination for Queen and '70s Who, giving this more than its share of pomp and circumstance. Then again, puffed-up protest is kind of the point of 21st Century Breakdown: it's meant to be taken seriously, so it's not entirely surprising that Green Day fall into many of the same pompous tarpits as their heroes, ratcheting up the stately pianos, vocal harmonies, repeated musical motifs, doubled and tripled guitars, and synthesized effects that substitute for strings, then adding some orchestras for good measure. It would all sound cluttered, even turgid, if it weren't for Green Day's unerring knack for writing muscular pop and natural inclination to run clean and lean, letting only one song run over five minutes and never letting the arrangements overshadow the song. Although Green Day's other natural gift, that for impish irreverent humor, is missed — they left it all behind on their 2008 garage rock side project Foxboro Hot Tubs — the band manages to have 21st Century Breakdown work on a grand scale without losing either their punk or pop roots, which makes the album not only a sequel to American Idiot, but its equal.

This album is by far the best album Green Day has ever made-with 18 songs-that's pretty good. I just don't understand how anyone could hate this album and think its a waste of money because it's most definitely not! Here's some things I'd like to address:
First off, Green Day is most likely not going back to their old days, sounding like Dookie anymore. That was a great album too and they've gotten better and better throughout the years. Their earlier albums also had so many short songs on them (1-3 min.) which is fine, but their newer ones (Warning, American Idiot, and this one) have longer songs which seems better in my opinion.
Secondly, I've read many reviews on here and I start to lose it when I see things like "this is complete garbage/trash." I also saw a couple that said "this is the end of greenday" or "Retire already." Seriously? You have nothing better to say? Some of those reviews are just plain lies and disrespectful, and Green Day will most likely not retire. Guess what-first, most reviews I saw were more 4/5 stars than 1,2,3 stars and second, the band also came out with a live album in August called "Last Night On Earth"- I wonder which album that song came from? Oh, yeah-21st CENTURY BREAKDOWN! So this is not the end of Green Day. So if your going to write a bad review about an album, at least try to be nicer about it (ex. this album was just not good for me and I hope they can do better next time). I'm sorry if I'm telling you negative people how to write a review, it's just that some of those comments I read are just not right.
To end it, I just have to say-Green Day-keep going, you're doing great. And for anyone who didn't buy this album yet, go ahead and get it! Again, no one should completely hate this album-it's fantastic!

Horrible. Its a "21 Century Letdown". DO NOT BUY

This album is a 18 track long and about an hour long piece of boy band garbage. It now seems oblivious that Green Day is getting influence from other alternative and boy bands such as Fall Out Boy. This album has nothing to do with Green Day. I don't care if other fans and boy band listeners conclude that "this is the best album ever" or "this band shows plenty of maturation". Oh there is maturation all right, but its not the right kind either. It a form of garbage which keeps getting worse. Green Day needs to change back to their 1990's roots or they could be done for. The only good song in this album is "21 Guns". If anything, only buy this song, but no other tracks from this album. With all this said, do NOT buy this hunk of junk. You will regret you wasted time and money for this, when that time and money could've been spend towards that Dookie album or a classic Metallica album, like Master of Puppets.

Biography

Formed: 1988 in Berkeley, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Out of all the post-Nirvana alternative bands to break into the pop mainstream, Green Day were second only to Pearl Jam in terms of influence. At their core, Green Day were simply punk revivalists who recharged the energy of speedy, catchy three-chord punk-pop songs. Though their music wasn't particularly...
