iTunes Review

When two creative individuals come together to work, the results can be either inspired or implosive. The singular singer/songwriter/pianist/arranger Regina Spektor collaborated with not one but four different producers on her fifth studio album, Far, and the result fortifies the Russian-American’s already impressive body of work. Traveling Wilbury Jeff Lynne E.L.O., Paul McCartney and David Kahne Sugar Ray, Matthew Sweet all worked with Spektor, who delves largely into the grand theme of religion. “Laughing With,” the haunting lead-off single, might have its analog in the saying “there are no atheists in foxholes.” “The Calculation” is pure joy, while “Blue Lips” evolves from a cinematically reflective introduction to an actively explorative cadence.

Regina Spektor - Far

I must admit that three-quarters of the way through Regina Spektor's last album Begin to Hope
icon she had lost me. I loved the dynamic vocal style and moving melodies of the single releases. But I did, at times, find myself wondering where the producer was when she started rambling lyrically and musically.

Perhaps it is that my musical tastes matured a bit in the past years, but whatever the case, I immensely enjoyed Far
iconI still, however, found myself a number of times throughout the album saying, "Regina, how do you get away with this?"; like when she offers an abrupt change of harmonic mood at the end of "Laughing With" to complete the cliche "I'm not laughing at you I'm laughing with you." But this time I said it with a smile and a chuckle.

I love the dramatic feel of the simply produced piano and vocal tracks. The fully developed pop songs are easy on the ear (even when she inaccurately mimics dolphin noises in "Folding Chair"). And when her almost whispering voice changes to a powerul announcement that someone or other has won human of the year and then yodels down the scale with amazing grace, I got the shivers.

My favorite track is "Wallet" which is a stream-of-conscious-'ish' song about finding a blockbuster card in someone's old wallet next to a stick of juicy fruit. It left me feeling like I didn't quite yet understand all of the metaphors in Ms. Spektor's newest album and could possibly be missing the point of everything she meant to convey. I would have to play it again to figure it out.
