Deep South -- Deep Expression
by 4MUL8RAs a fan of Leverty's Wanderlust and Southern Exposure, it was neat to see his latest CD pop up in iTunes, so I grabbed it. I was pleasantly surprised to hear Mr. Leverty take new directions with songs of great emotional power. The songs, as interpreted, have so many new dimensions that I'm still a bit awe-struck, hearing all the instrumental tracks so rich in color, along with very impressive vocal performances that clearly respect the lyrical meaning.
Mr. Leverty's incredible guitar skills are well-known, but in Deep South, one gets a full range of expression from his guitar. In each song, the instrument is used to bring out different colors, different ideas, and different phrases. Hard rock, screaming leads, and thundering power chords are familiar to his fans, but in this offering, one also gets to hear finger-picking acoustic, banjo, mandolin, dobro, and twelve-string strumming. Amazing!
What struck me most was Mr. Leverty's imaginative voicing of these songs, most of which are many years old. Boll Weevil is an example of taking a plaintive Southern lament in a direction one would never expect--more along lines of deep Southern rock, with an echoing overlay that brings to mind the pain of the cotton farmer.
Listening to the entire collection, one cannot help but think of the old South, the hard-scrabble life of the ancestors of today's suffering suburbanites. Truly, Deep South is worth exploring, and is a most enjoyable collection of classic music.
