iTunes Review

Brooklyn’s Stellastarr* transport themselves from time and place, playing music that sounds as if it’s come from the U.K. in the ‘80s. The bristling basslines, the sturdy, unflinching beats, the churning modulating guitars and the near-perfect imitation of the Cure’s Robert Smith couldn’t be more apparent than in tunes such as “Tokyo Sky” and “Numbers,” where you’re forgiven if you think you’ve stumbled upon outtakes from the Cure’s Three Imaginary Boys or Faith. The sound is slightly more elaborate — that’s 2009 for you — but the tenor is pure early European Goth. This won’t win stellastarr* any awards for originality but it should entrance Cure fans and anyone who loves melodies that frolic in the shadows of British industrial towns. Tracks such as “Graffiti Eyes,” “Warchild,” and “Prom Zombie” feature enough drama and tight ensemble playing (the female back-ups from bassist Amanda Tannen soften things with a seductive touch) to make for multi-tiered listening, even if the initial influences are overwhelming.

Stellastarr is rare treat

If you appreciate alternative rock music then you definantly need to check this band out. I get bored with all the bands that sound the same. Stellastarrs music is extremely creative in how they are able to integrate their music influences and make it their own. Excellent band that is not getting the radio play that they deserve.

Great Listen

I'm surprised at all the Cure references. great original sound throughout and incredibly listenable. Crosses a lot of alternative/electronic boundaries and very skillfully produced. A true joy for this year.

LOVE Stellastarr*

It seems forever and a day since Harmonies for the Haunted and I'm so glad that Civilized wasn't a disappointment. So many other of my favorite bands and artists have been producing only mediocre work these days. If you haven't had the chance to see Stellastarr* live, but a fortunate opportunity presents itself, consider yourself rewarded! I saw them open for Placebo several years ago at 9:30 Club in DC and then again in Atlanta when they toured for Harmonies. No fluff - just awesome music!
