Look at the album cover - "TRACKS FROM 'LIVE AT THE OLYMPIA' COMING THIS OCTOBER"

Mixed Feelings . . .
by MoochieI do not go to live shows to hear the recorded version of an artist's songs done live, note for note per the original. I expect a band to grow as people & develop in style & depth & I expect their live performances will grow & develop accordingly. Asking too much? Not at all. Far be it from me to expect any band to conform to my memory of them from 25 years ago. I've been going to REM shows since 1983 (just days after Reckoning came out, actually) & I've never been disappointed. They've always been ready & willing to mix it up & take chances in their arrangements & choices of covers. To be clear, I'm not at all disappointed with these tracks & I can't wait for the whole collection. But I'd rather have a collection of rethought versions as they brilliantly & powerfully rethought Let Me In on the Accelerate tour last year. If the full live collection is merely another live document of songs preserved in amber, close to their original recorded version . . . I won't be purchasing. Been there, heard that - dozens of times. I mean, the lads just released a double live album in 2007! Granted, it focused on more recent work, proving the effectiveness of the Around the Sun songs in a live setting (far more effective than on the album, IMO), which was revelatory & welcome. But that collection had plenty of REM standards that do not need to appear on a live album again.
So . . . mixed feelings. Of course, I'll wait until the full details of the new collection are released to make up my mind. But to hear Second Guessing & Letter Never Sent live again is totally worth the price of admission!
