iTunes Review

After a number of releases that confounded some and charmed others, Portugal The Man hit the jackpot with 2008’s Censored Colors, a strong and souful blend of rock styles both vintage and contemporary. The Satanic Satanist is an impressive follow-up, opening and closing with two tracks, “People Say” and “Mornings,” that are ripe with the mature pop swagger of a band like Oasis. And everything in between bursts with chart-topping ambition, although the work is a shade smarter and more complex than most chart fodder. Tracks like “Work All Day” and “The Sun” have a fluid, easy feel, with John Baldwin Gourley’s flowing falsetto leading the synths and guitars into an appealing, colorful mosaic of sunny pop, while tracks like “Lovers In Love” and “The Home” reach back into the vaults of soul and psych-pop hits from yesterday (listen to those raging bongos on “Lovers!”). Produced by Paul Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies, Uncle Tupelo), The Satanic Satanist propels Portugal The Man to the top of the indie pop heap. (The seven bonus acoustic tracks on the deluxe edition are rich with tambourines, acoustic guitars, and a ’60s sing-along vibe.)

Another great album

For me this album felt like a mix of censored colors and waiter! you vultures. Its good and the songs are well played, the only downside I found was that all the songs were really short. I listened to the whole album and it seemed like I was through it before it started. Good ablum though. i hope they will keep making music because it is unique and constructed beautifully

A Refreshing Refreshment

I did not expect to like this album one bit. What I was surprised to find was a totally honest, catchy-as-hell, indie-pop/rock record. The best thing about it is that it's almost like this band has no concept of current indie trends (which--let's face it--are pretty boring anyway)! Maybe this has something to do with the fact that they hail from a place about as far away from any of the American indie rock epicenters as you can find (Alaska!?). I don't know what your hipster friends or Pitchdork will think, but I sure as hell like it.

There has to be some credit given for this band's name alone — co-founder John Gourley once explained it as an attempt to create a demi-mythic entity bigger than the individual members. Formed in Wasilla, AK, Portugal. The Man (yes, there's a period in the middle of their name) grew out of the...
