Jeremy David Michaels Delivers Big!
by mctasselThe former frontman and songwriter for indie band Easton debuts with his solo effort and it doesn't fall short of expectations. Back in 2005-2006, Easton was on the radar of several top label execs. Though never signed, Easton music remains popular on MySpace and iTunes.
This departure is a more laid back "poppy" sound and evokes the more sophisticated and mature side of this singer/songwriter. "Miles of Air" is an upbeat, Motown-like arrangement that brings back memories of John Hall & Orleans-like sound popular on the mid-seventies charts.
"Simple Not Easy" a song written about the challenges of moving forward is framed with a rythmic blending of tropical acoustic flow easing into a chorus of "It's simple not easy, and it's easier said than done" shows that hesitation is a mind-tool that often prevents us from savoring what's right in front of us. Another words, as Einstein once said, "In the middle of every great difficulty,
lies opportunity".Probably the most radio-worthy song on the album "Nobody" takes the listener to a private place via more stoic lyrical framework. While repetitive, almost mantra-like in nature, this song grabs you with a hypnotic, pleasurable sense of carefree indulgence. Now picture Chris Martin (Coldplay) in a jam packed arena filled with silent fans. That's sort of the turn
the album takes as "Livng Life Free" a ballad of two hometown teens that leave the nest and discover that freedom often has a price attached. A live, almost stripped version of "If You Want it
Too" is a ditty of a song remnant of Cat Steven's Tea for The Tillerman era highlighted by a neat falsetto moment that effortlessly bridges the simplicity of this song.
This is a highly recommended collection of songs from a genuinely talented young artist. Over the past two weeks, I've played this CD over and over again and each time is a fresh listen. Amazingly, this album was recorded in just under a week. That's not suprising as veteran engineer Ethan Carlson (Barry Gibb & Bee Gees) along with drummer Pepe Valasques produced a pleasing and uncluttered mix of tracks. Some of Miami's finest studio musicians appear on the album along with Easton keyboard wizard, Marc Feldman.
Jeremy David Michaels delivers big on his first solo effort. This one's a keeper.
