iTunes Review
Since the film’s story utilizes the show-within-a-show formula, half this soundtrack resonates with the guilty pleasure of High School Musical-inspired cheese, while the other half boasts some of Canada’s finest indie artists. Cast member Cassie Steele opens with “Crash My Party” which plays like an energy drink ad but hardly sets the tone. Winnipeg’s Keith and Rene get things going with “Good Year,” a catchy power pop tune with winding guitars driving the duo’s harmonies like a commercialized Mates of State. Montreal’s the Blue Seeds deliver “My Fair Weather Friend,” a pulsing and infectious song boasting glockenspiel, lap steel guitar and singer Amelie Laflamme’s sultry voice. Jake Epstein delivers in spades with the moody “Rescue You,” especially when that charming falsetto kicks in. The two main standouts are “All I Wanna Do” by the School, Canada’s answer to the ‘60s girl group revival (replete with faux Phil Spector production), and Scout’s “Come On and Go,” a dark and beautiful ballad that perfectly captures what it’s like to be lost in the burning urgency of teenage emotions.
