iTunes Review

Hardcore proponents of black metal may argue that since the Black Dahlia Murder are injecting their fourth studio album with hints of melody, the Waterford, Michigan quintet’s music can no longer be called black metal. But subgenre nitpicking aside, the subtle melodies heard on Deflorate don’t turn the songs into the kinds of tunes you can hum to yourself. From the opening assault of “Black Valor” it’s hard to believe that this band hails from Michigan and not Bergen, Norway especially since Trevor Strnad’s shrill, larynx-shredding shrieks sometimes resemble those of Gaahl from Gorgoroth. Named after a mythological city of the dead, “Necropolis” is easily the most evil sounding number here. “A Selection Unnatural” is another standout with pummeling riffs, lightning leads and rapid-fire drum beats from new guitarist Ryan Knight that fly like a hail of bullets. Unlike most recorded drumming in this genre, the drums on Deflorate sound less mechanical and more like an actual drum kit, giving the album an overall classic sound and a live feel.

One of the best

The Black Dahlia Murder got a new guitarist for this record, and everyone claimed he was the best. I do agree the guitar work on this album is better than any other TBDM album, but for all the hype I heard, I was too impressed. Don't get me wrong, this album is great- still behind Maisma through- but it doesn't break any boundaries. Anyways the best songs on the album are Black Valor, Necropolis, Necropolis, Chris Deformed, and I Will Return. Get this if you liked their past albums.

With every album, TBDM gets better and better. Please support these guys and buy their albums or some of their merchandise to support the band.

Not too good, not too bad

There are postivies and negatives to this album. On the positive side, it's full of wonderful melodic riffs and excellent drum work. On the negative, there are few standouts, and most of the songs blend together. Lyrically, this is album is overdone, especially numbers such as Christ Deformed, which seem to be picked out a Deicide booklet. Come on guys, you haven't earned what they've earned. See That Which Erodes the Most Tender of Things and Eyes of A Thousand for more memorable and original work.

Detroit's the Black Dahlia Murder actually sounds like they should live in Scandinavia, whence originates much of the frenetic brand of death and black metal that inspires them.
