iTunes Review

You might as well tack another X onto the title of the XX's buzz-building debut. After all, it's essentially makeout music for cool kids; steely quiet-storm soundscapes that redefine R&B for a generation that loves Aaliyah and the post-everything productions of Timbaland as much as freshly-pressed Hot Chip singles and faded Cure LPs. Since they're all barely 20, the four South Londoners in the XX are those kind of kids, yet their music speaks to all of us via torch-song tales of love and longing, as chased with smoke ring synths, billowing beats, skeletal basslines, and guitar riffs that ripple more than a pond that's been pounded by rocks. It's addictive stuff, to say the least — a simple but satisfying album that rewards repeat listens and makes for brilliant background music. Not too hard; not too soft … just the XX, doing their thing as the entire blogosphere looks on with baited breath and erratic pulse rates.

Solid first take

If you're into some more downtempo-ish stuff, relaxing, yet interesting music, and like your vocal and instrumental melodies to compliment each othernicely, you'll enjoy The XX's first studio album.
The only downside to this album is that after the song "Islands" it gets a little boring. It's still nice, but the second half yanks the fifth star out of it's spot.

Helping Me Just Relax Already

I'm really drawn to this album. It reminds me of Tricky or Massive Attack, but fresher and less harsh and technical.

Neo Vampire Lounge Music

by Kid Drake

First off don't let the title mislead you - this album is very good. But because of its sparse and dark sound it conjures images of an under-lit lounge where heroin chic teenagers slowly move about a crush red velvet room feeling the ecstasy of the drug run through their veins and delight in the shared environment. Its sexy, hip, and low key. The problem is I feel like Chairlift did the same exact thing last year and a bit better as they weren't held to this ambient idea and had some variation. However I personally feel, I can not deny how artistically interesting this album is. In a world of larger than life pop stars make bigger and heavily produced music, independents, such as the fore mentioned Chairlift, Feist (and to a lesser extent D.C.F.C. and Hot Chip), are going more simplistic in their sounds; and in that simplistically comes easy and relaxed music that, quite frankly, you could listen to on a lazy day reading or napping. It becomes part of the space it plays in, or perhaps forces one to adjust their environment to it. Either way its a sign of a good album.
