iTunes Review

Boston jam rock trio State Radio's third studio long-player opens with “Mansin Humanity,” a grunge marinated indie-rocker saturated in rich guitar distortion that sounds like the band barged Crazy Horse’s rehearsal space and borrowed their gear. The following “Calling All Crows” changes the tone drastically with the kind of college friendly Rasta jam with lyrics that call for a peaceful revolution. “Doctor Ron the Actor” moves faster with the swift strumming of ska-tinged guitars and a tight horn section. “Arsenic & Clover” gets a bit more raucous with a hard driving chorus and a wonderfully fuzzy bass solo from Chuck Fay that leaves you wanting to hear more if only because it’s inside of the harder numbers where State Radio sound in their element. “Held Up By The Wires” is a perfect example — you can hear hints of In Utero era Nirvana seeping from the crunchy, grinding guitars and former Dispatch member Chad Urmston’s voice sometimes segueing into a Kurt Cobainesque drawl.

very very good album. 41 songs for 15 bucks is so worth it. little different from year of the crow and us against the crown, but all 3 albums have been epic. this one has a more reggae feel to it, by also including some powerful lyrics. blood escaping man is a great song. best songs on here are blood escaping man, calling all crows, knights of bostonia, and doctor ron the actor. doesnt mean the other songs arent good, because everything on here was great. def recommend it for SR fans and those just getting into the band.

Let It Go

by Don't let it go

"Let It Go" is not the best work of the band. Its got some great tracks on it. The album is really reagge and hard rock infused. More so then SR normally puts out on one album. They almost seem polar opposites. Songs like Mansin Humanity almost sound like Black Sabboth in the 70s, Arsnic and Clover comes close to this. On the other spectrum you have Bohemian Grove a traditional sounding reggae song with reggae riffs, a heavy bass line and passive aggressive activist lyrics. Evolution is close behind on this syle. The album really shines with Dr. Ron the Actor and Held Up by The Wires. Dr. Ron is a great almost Sublime quality ska song with powerful and inspirational lyrics. Held up, follows the heavy Sabboth, and yes Nirvana-esq grung sound complete with lyrics that make you think.

The other songs are ok in their own regard but have trouble with the overall flow of the album. Individually they are good, but the differnece in tempo makes it a difficult album to listen to from start to finish unike State Radios previous albums- notable the LPs Year of the Crow and Us Against the Crown. Year of the Crow is great for SR's aggressive anti-establishment message and highlights their use of punk rock and grunge as a medium. Us Against the Crown showcases Chads's song writing and lyrical abilities in a manner much friendlier to Dispatch fans.

Let It Go is a great fan album, but shouldn't be recommended for new listeners. When combined witht the solo show at the Brattle Theater however its a bargain that shouldn't be missed.
