An incredible debut. An intimate masterpiece.

by Hey Bue

To start with, I can’t think of a single album this year that has filled me with such a feeling of excitement as Girls In Trouble’s debut. It’s rare to find an artist who is able to coax startling and intimate details out of the oldest stories in the Book--not merely the Bible but the oldest story of all: loneliness and the search for and discovery of love. Like Sufjan Stevens’, Seven Swans and Joni Mitchell’s, Blue, the lyrics are extraordinary and only part of the story. Alicia Jo Rabins arrangements invite us in and then challenge us to find our own place amidst the sound and the silence. Like the most revelatory and lasting pieces of art, this album offers deeper gifts every time one listens to it.

Surprising and wonderful

Alicia Jo Rabins' voice is at once affecting and detached - I love it! I had no idea this album was a song cycle about the women of the bible (!) - on first listen it just sounds like any other slice of sublime, amazingly nuanced folk rock... but without the affectation that plagues that genre. Accomplishes the perfect balance of instant accessibility and rewarding depth that all my most favorite albums have achieved.

This album is great--really lovely tender sparse songs about Bibilical women that somehow open into something larger than the narratives they contain. "Snow" in particular manages to make me both euphoric and a little teary whenever I listen to it. I highly recommend it!
