by DigeeedadLast night I once again had the ABSOLUTE PRIVALEGE of seeing Joshua James perform at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, the closing night of his current cross country tour. I had seen him at the famous Troubador in LA on the opening night of his tour and several months earlier in Seattle and Portland.
Joshua is one of those VERY SPECIAL artists and people that can make me a bit emotional at times, when I realize that I am in the presence of someone who is truly doing what they were destined to do in their journey on our earth!
Last night, as was the case at each of the other of his shows that I attended, Joshua and his awesomely talented young band had the audience completely "locked-in" from the opening notes of the first song. It made my spirit smile again to realize that during his incredible songs, there was complete silence. No bottles clanging and no drunk people screaming into each other's faces, to be heard over the music... just wall to wall people mesmerized by this young man's music and performance and ear to ear grins everywhere! That silence was broken by thunderous screams of appreciation and applause at the end of EVERY song...
Joshua is an amazing songwriter! His singing is stunningly unique, ranging from beautifully soft and whispery to the intenely forceful exclamations from his soul. He paints some of the most vividly descriptive, beautiful and emotion filled lyrics and stories that I have heard ever heard.
"Build Me This" is easlily my favorite album of 2009! This brilliant album will appeal to people of widely varied musical tastes, from rock to country, blue grass and folk. It is silly to label and somewhat denegrating to try. There is something VERY SPECIAL for everyone here and virtually EVERY song is truly great! The musicianship and recording production values are top notch and this work of art sounds glorious. Like Joshua himself, this music is very much from the HEART..land!

Folks rock and root in powerful expression
by Paz.Thank you, Joshua, for more stories sung in raw expression. Honest emotions revealed. I would be surprised if fans of his previous music didn't enjoy this. (In other words, for new fans, I recommend his previous music also.) My favorite songs are Coal War, Weeds, In The Middle, Kitchen Tile, Daniel, Pitchfork, Wilted Daisies ("we're takin' aspirin for a broken wrist"), Farmer From The West, Ribbon Bows, Baby Boy, Water Run... obviously I find it hard to pick a favorite (the last two are included in the physical copy, from Northplatte Records). I find his stories most enjoyable through headphones, or live of course. Peace.
