Album Review

It has never been easy for an artist in the popular performing arts to break through to mass success, and it may be harder than ever now, when the old gateways, such as major record companies, are no longer signing unknowns and working to give them national exposure. Today, it seems, an artist must also be a marketing expert as well. Decades ago, a label might have snapped up folk-rock singer/songwriter Chris Ayer, leading to radio exposure, a national concert tour, and interviews in big magazines and newspapers, all establishing him in the popular mind. But in the first decade of the 21st century, this performer, with his warm tenor, catchy tunes, and earnest lyrics, must release his own discs on a label he calls Another Record Company, and book his own tours. He reflects on the modern world of ProTools and Limewire in the ironic "Roy G. Biv," an uptempo number powered by a slide guitar, and elsewhere with a less humorous tone he examines his motives and his successes so far in a career that has produced a number of recordings and seen him cover quite a few miles. "I haven't lost," he sings in "Awake," "I just haven't won quite yet." That may have to pass for optimism for an artist with a knack for writing and performing infectious music, but who is, like so many of his peers, without the means to get that music out to a larger audience, or rather, to find a means to get that larger audience to pay attention to him.

An unbelievable talent

by Dr. Alli

Chris Ayer has been my favorite singer/songwriter for several years. He has yet to write one song that I don't absolutely LOVE (I can't say that about any of my other favorite musicians), and his songwriting just keeps getting better and better. It is hard to put into words how his music affects me, but simply put, it just stirs the soul. It's what music is for! He has a voice like an angel, and writes in many different styles, some slow and some that make you want to get up and dance. He was a philosophy major in college and that really comes through in his lyrics which are always amazingly thoughtful and meaningful. I can't say enough about his talent. Don't Go Back To Sleep is an incredible album that won't disappoint!

I hope you just bought the album, or will in the next minute.

Chris Ayer's music is perfect for any situation: whether you're on a long roadtrip, sailing out on a bay, or just winding down after a long day at work. Chris' intelligent and philosophical lyrics, combined with his laidback and approachable sound provide a pleasant and relaxing listening experience.

"Don't Go Back to Sleep" is Chris Ayer's newest effort with a more matured sound and perfectly displays his range of talents. Whether it's for the contemplative nature of "In the Silence," the foot tapping beat of "Roy G. Biv," or the building crescendo in "The Revealing," the entire album is a must-have.

Chris is definitely going places, and I cannot wait to see (and hear) what he comes out with next. If you haven't already done so, go ahead and click that "Buy Album" button. It's money well spent.

You have to love it!

I've been listening to Ayer's albums since I ran into his songs on iTunes U a couple of years ago, and I love 'em all! The music reminds me of a male, better, catchier version of Allison Weiss--relatively simple tunes with lyrics and beats that stick in your head all day. They're very folksy and sound very much like live recordings without the background noise, and this album is different without variating too much from Ayer's other CDs. The more upbeat songs are fantastic, and "Roy G. Biv" is possibly the best pick of all his songs. All of Ayer's albums are great, but Don't Go Back to Sleep is my favorite!
