iTunes Review

Sea Wolf’s beautiful 2008 debut, Leaves In the River, came wrapped in darkness and fog, but White Water, White Bloom arrives — fittingly — awash in promising spring sunshine and something resembling a revived spirit. Principal member and songwriter Alex Brown Church’s earthy voice sounds more purposeful, piano keys are struck more forcefully, and even the fluttery strings are more hopeful than sorrowful. There are tracks just as fragile and evocative as those on the debut, such as the acoustic guitar-driven “The Orchard” and the folky “Orion & Dog,” but for the most part, White Water has a little more fire in its belly. Church’s cascading lilt on tracks like “Turn the Dirt Over,” and the lush orchestration on songs like the title track and “Spirit Horse” put Sea Wolf squarely in the company of soul searching, folk-rock artists like Bright Eyes and the Decemberists. “O Maria!” is infused with cool, indie-rock petulance and opening track “Wicked Blood” features emphatic piano and strings churning beneath Church’s warm, multi-tracked vocals; both are memorable and elegant.

Just saw them in SLC, Utah last Friday. Absolutely brilliant album and show. Sara Lov was equally as great. This is a great sophomore album. Absolutely love all the tracks here. As for the reviewer who said that this wasn't as good as the first, but that he bought them at the same time, boo! You can't judge a brand new album and compare it to a year and a half ago. You need to review based on multiple listenings.

And for the review I saw online about ripping off Arcade Fire—Really?! Whatever. This is so not like Arcade Fire. The cello is what definitely sets Sea Wolf apart from other indie projects. Way more intelligent lyrics and emotion in this music. Hear Orion & Dog, for example. Gorgious melody with amazing strings to boot. Other gems—Turn the Dirt Over, Wicked Blood, The Traitor with stellar lead guitar riffs.

Thank you Sea Wolf.

Disappointed

This pales so much in comparison to the album Leaves in the River, the lyrics seem to lack depth and most of the songs sound flat.

Much like Iron & Wine or many similar indie outfits, Sea Wolf is the project name of a sole singer/songwriter who drafts in other musicians as the occasion warrants. That singer/songwriter is Alex Church, a California native who looks to local authors like John Steinbeck and Jack London (whose 1904...
