iTunes Review

Creed represent a form of hard rock that deliberately resists change. Once the formula is perfected, the goal is to replicate it as often as possible until its positive effects can no longer be felt. It’s no surprise that ego would tear this band apart. Eight years have given the band the chance to catch their breath and come up with a consistently strong album that still manages to sound as if they’d never called it quits in the first place. The band excels at music that believes in itself beyond all else. It takes a completely self-possessed hard-rock singer like Scott Stapp to lead the attack convincingly. “Overcome” is a tough, challenging, likable opener. “Rain” sports the band’s nod towards Seattle grunge. “Away In Silence” delivers the dynamics that made the band arena favorites, from an acoustic lullaby to a crunchy anthem. “Fear” throws in a funky riff. The title track again goes to the acoustic guitar for a bluesy cruise. “Time” ripples in the sad waters. Creed never looks to reinvent the wheel as long as their wheel is working fine.

A Sign of Good Things to Come

First of all, hell yes for a Creed reunion! Celebrations aside, having listened to this whole album a few times, there are plenty of good things and less good things to say. I really love the heavier sound that Creed brings to this album, even in some of the softer songs. I also love Scott Stapp's vocals; they seem to have benefited from several years' maturity and it really boosts the Creed sound a bunch. And thank heaven Mark Tremonti gets more opportunities to showcase his guitar skills (I especially love the solo in Overcome). All that aside, I don't think the album is stronger than either Weathered or Human Clay because it sticks to a more generic rock-song formula and is hardly broken throughout the album. There's not much epic quality in the songs, which is what I always love about Creed's older work. Despite this, I think Creed made a good impact with this reunion effort and I am waiting (very) patiently for their future releases.

My favorite songs are Overcome, A Thousand Faces, Rain, Away in Silence, and On My Sleeve.
