iTunes Review
Brett Anderson hasn’t been the same since leaving the Britpop band Suede. His third album, Slow Attack, is quite a bit more orchestrated than his first two minimalist attempts, but Anderson is still far from the glitzy glam-rocker who sang of “Metal Mickey.” In 2009, Anderson’s trolling in the open fields and creating a bucolic folk-pop that sounds like it’s meant to accompany a nature tour on the National Geographic Channel. “Hymn” begins as a solemn quiet to warm things up. “Wheatfields” follows with a sound that does remind one of the simple pleasures of flat, fertile land. “The Hunted” aches with a tribal menace in its vocal and musical underpinnings. “Frozen Roads” kicks in with icy chords from the keyboard and a reflection on the effects of a February snow. Not until near the album’s close with “Julian’s Eyes” does a touch of nightlife and cabaret come to pass. But it’s quickly settled in with “Leave Me Sleeping.” The rock star is no longer the lounge lizard of old but needs to replenish his soul. The music will take you there.
Customer Reviews
Brett in top form
This record is the best thing Brett has done since Dog Man Star, which this record's dark, lush instrumentation somewhat resembles. But while DMS was more angry and dramatic, this is a more lush, mature, reflective affair - in a good way. It's a crime that Brett has taken so many cheap shots as a solo artist, and that not one major paper listed this album in their year-end top 50 (or whatever) list. There are endless rewards listening to the flugal horn, piano, and Brett's supremely beautiful voice, esp. on "The Hunted" and "Frozen Roads." You feel like he really put his life into this one. I defy anyone to not fall in love with this utterly captivating record.
great~~
love this album~~ the huntered
A great album
Brett Anderson hasn't abandoned the persona he cultivated with Suede as much as many think. In his current indie folk turn, he remains a cool/vulnerable front man with a flair for drama. This new project is full of beauty and maturity that works well for Anderson as he's now in his forties. He's grown as have many of his original fans. Suede was good when he was in his early 20s, but this so right, right now.
