Track 12: Monster

It has a great 70's sounding breakdown in the 2nd half. Check it out. It's one of the best parts of the album.

Maybe this year's biggest disappointment

Honestly, I wanted to like this album. I almost preordered it. I bought this album STOKED to hear it. And I was really, really disappointed at just how big of a hit-and-miss Monster Monster was.

Firstly, the very first song, Monster Monster, is what I find to be the most disgusting song on the entire album. I skip it. The entire song is COMPLETELY uncreative musically and lyrically. What happened to those great contemplative but at the same time in-your-face lyrics from Southern Weather (album, not song)? I think the album suffers so much because obviously the songs are written around the idea of fighting off the monsters in our everyday lives. Not that this is a bad theme (inherently), it just seems that all the songs on the album are trying TOO hard to make a statement. On Southern Weather, it just happened. The music was written, and everything fell into place. This record however, feels like when a little kid gets frustrated with a puzzle, so he crams everything together.

A lot of people said that the debut album was very Underoath-y in style. And it was. However, I feel like the band took this a a bad thing, and tried to get away from that Underoath feeling with this record. What they ned to understand is that it's not a bad thing. If anything, it's a testament to how strong a creative force Gillespie is on Underoath. The Almost is like taking the same philosophical and lyrical ideas from Underoath, and putting them in a brand new musical package. It was NOT Underoath. It was different. Similar, but different. And I personally think that the band would do well to re-examine Southern Weather and pick out the advantages and incorporate that into their next album.
