Instant classic?

by BrutalGroove

I gave it a week or so to take it all in and I must say, this is an awesome release. It shows that they spent alot of time in song structure and mix-down because the songs just FEEL right. The textures and sometimes unexpected use of dynamics are artfully done, but never over done. Sometimes bands in this genre tend to get awkward and cheesy (for lack of a better word) in thier atempt to develope space and mood, but you will not find that here. The band shows a great amount of maturity by playing to the song and not spotlighting individuality, as a whole band they have devloped a collection that should rank with the classics.

Some have and will say that this is just an extented version of "The great cold distance" but look at this way, if they changed, or just expanded on there last release, people would still complain one way or another. Accept this for what it is, a great collection of music. Great job guys.

Album of the Year Candidate

Just recently stumbled upon Katatonia and now one of my favorite bands. Heavy, dark, brooding, atmospheric, chill, melodic...all the good stuff. Forsaker is just begging to be played live, while Onward Into Battle and Liberation have the best choruses on the album. The harmonies are superb on the album so hopefully they pull them off live. A must-have album for 2009.

NOT same genre as TOOL...but amazing in its own right

this album should not be compared to tool at all...that does not mean its a bad album...on the contrary, it is a different genre altogether. It is comparable to "porcupine tree" but still set apart from them as well... this a a GREAT album if you can appreciate phenomenal musicianship, progressive styles, and melancholy undertones all wrapped in a rather talented package. I have listened to the entire album 3 times now and as a previous poster wrote it DOES get better with each listen - and it already it a fantastic piece of work. 2 thumbs and 2 Great toes up
