iTunes Review
Carrie Underwood accomplishes a good deal on her third album Play On. She reconfirms her stature as one of country’s outstanding female vocalists while making a bold play for the pop marketplace. Play On gives her a batch of superior tunes to apply her sterling vocals to, ranging from sweet folk-country numbers (“This Time,” “Quitter”) to sleek ‘n’ sassy twang-rockers (“Undo It”). Underwood harkens back to her hit “Before He Cheats” by tearing into a gallery of two-timing boyfriends on scathing tracks like “Cowboy Casanova” and “Songs Like This.” Anger isn’t the predominant note here, though — themes of gratitude (“Mama’s Song”), idealism (“Change”) and spiritual affirmation (“Temporary Home”) lend this album a positive glow. Underwood shows her innate grace as a singer on two aching ballads, “Someday When I Start Loving You” and “What Can I Say” (the latter a duet with Sons of Sylvia’s Ashley Clark). She soars mightily on the title track, infusing it with the fire of a personal credo. Play On combines technical excellence with genuine heart.

best yet!
by PeAcE_lOvE_hApPiNeSs_123when some hearts came out, i was completly astonished by how well she sang. and then carnival ride was amazing! but Play on is definetly the best yet! GO CARRIE GO! I love her music so much, anyone who likes taylor swift, miranda lambert, sugarland, or kellie pickler would fall in love with all of carrie underwoods music. my favorite song has to be play on and mamas song, but of course they are all great, my least favorite would probably be undo it...i still like it, but its not my favorite. GO CARRIE!
Top Female Vocalist
by Kenny_ChisholmShe may have lost the female vocalist award at this year’s CMA but there’s absolutely no denying the fact that Carrie Underwood is the best female singer in country music today. With her third effort ‘Play On’ Carrie once again reminds us of her powerful vocals and is set to return to the top of the charts.
Sticking to the formula that brought her plenty of success with the last two albums, this 13 tracks CD comprises of songs that are very well selected, with a good mix of fun upbeat songs as well as songs that speaks to you on a more emotional level.
With songs like the highly addictive first single ‘Cowboy Casanova’ along with ‘Undo It, ‘Quitter’, ‘This Time’ and ‘Songs Like This’ Carrie experiment with various POP/ROCK sounds while maintaining the country integrity at its core. These are not traditional country music, no, but the country music we hear on the radio these days that appeals to a wider audience.
Those looking for songs with a little more traditional country sound to it will be satisfied with tracks like ‘Someday When I Stop Loving You’, ‘Look at Me’ and the second single ‘Temporary Home’, which is a testament to Carrie’s spiritual belief and is without a doubt, one of the highlights on this CD.
Also on the CD are the tracks ‘Unapologize’ and ‘What Can I Say?’ There’s no denying the fact that these two songs especially ‘Unapologize’ are downright POP songs. Having such songs on the CD makes things rather interesting. These tracks are made available on the CD for one reason - to cross over into the POP market, and with the awesomeness that is ‘Unapologize’ this move is pretty much a no brainer. Guess we will just have to wait and see.
Finally there’s the tracks that serves as reminiscence to Carrie’s previous work, these tracks reminds us as to why we love our girl so much. Songs like ‘Change’, ‘Mama’s Song’ and ‘Play On’. The arrangement as well as production of these tracks may not be anything we haven’t heard Carrie done before, but they do convey new messages, especially true for the case of ‘Change’ which is one of my favorites on the album.
I really do appreciate how the tracks are arranged. No back to back tracks are similar in sounding which is one of the pitfalls on her previous albums. This along with the diversity, the brilliant production as well as superb vocal performance makes this third effort her best yet. This is the CD to buy, and as a fan I can’t wait for what’s in store in this particular era.
