Even though Julian Casblancas is the singer and main songwriter for the Strokes, he doesn’t pursue the Strokes sound or even emphasize his voice on this debut solo album. Instead, he jams himself into the mix and explores a different take on retro than his retro-garage band. “Out of the Blue” kicks things off with a heavily compressed wall of sound, the soothing ‘oohs’ of the chorus lost in a swirl of ‘60s-inspired guitars and keyboards. “Left & Right In the Dark” begins with a soothing roller-rink organ and processed vocals layered among the staccato guitar licks, sounding like slightly more edgy ‘70s MOR. “11th Dimension” sports happy synthesizers for an ‘80s dance party. “4 Chords of the Apocalypse” channels a ‘60s R&B ballad through the automaton sounds of the ‘80s. “Ludlow St.” throws in a country music lope amidst its cramped keyboard heavy arrangement. “River of Brakelights” ramps up the Gary Numan “Cars” influence as it swings out of control. “Glass” slows things for an electro ballad. “Tourist” closes things out with a swinging gait, some deep bass rumbles and Casablancas’ lazy-man vocals rolling right into the cascading keyboards.

Both Inspired & Inspiring
by noel binghamThis album is truly incredible. Each time I listen, I like it more & more. It seems so complex to me that you almost can't take it all in on the first listen. It is so different, it is overwhelming... in a good way. The musical & lyrical phrasing & combination of instruments seems innovative & unexpected. The songs seem really tight & meticulous. There's so much detail within each song from beginning to end. Many of the songs have truly remarkable & noteworthy starts. The kind of song start that makes you shake your head in disbelief at how amazing it is. Phrases is one of the best albums I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. It is a thoughtful album. It's rare to be so moved by music, but so exciting when it happens. If you got really excited the first time you heard the Strokes sound, you'll feel the same about Julian's solo album, it's that good.

by anamen12Amazing album. I saw Julian perform in LA and seeing him duplicate the album sound on stage made me appreciate this album even more. I would say this album is one of the top 10 albums of the year. Even the one song that did not really appeal to me the first time I heard it (4 Chords of the Apocalypse) grew on me after a few listens. Buy this album. You will LOVE it. Great work Julian!
Some epic things on this album
by DavisonicI don't if many of you have listened the deluxe version of this great album, that includes three more songs, one of them being "30 Minute Boyfriend". This song simply gave me the goose bumps when I fist heard its chorus, its just...what...GREAT...! I think it is the best song, together with "Glass". And the kind of song that youll listen 20 years later and will think "f*, how I miss those days..."
