iTunes Review

Snatches of Christmas carols make their way into these Amos-penned tunes of the moody winter season. Joy is in the ear of the beholder and Amos vacillates between open joy (“Harps of Gold”) and sublime winter mystery (“What Child, Nowell”) where she entwines traditional Christmas melodies with her own sophisticated soundscapes. This lush, orchestrated collection, centered with Amos at the piano, creates a warm, crackling fire with its deep twists of drama. “Snow Angel” beats forth with a weaving string section that resembles endless ocean waves. “Holly, Ivy and Rose” lingers between the foreboding stillness of the frozen air and the season’s festive joy. Midwinter Graces is not an album of seasonal cheer, but an album of seasonal mysticism that will appeal to Amos’ fans, who have been sent on many an adventure with recent studio albums. The gentle twinkle of “Jeanette, Isabella,” the nightclub swagger of “Pink and Glitter,” the solemn austerity of “Emmanuel” and the sneak peek into future hope with “Our New Year” are among the most straightforward and touching works Amos has constructed.

Tori is Tori again!!!

It's weird I love Tori and used to think is she wrote jingles for toliet paper I'd buy em. But then she lost me a bit on her last album. I guess she had to do things that I didn't quite get. But on a Xmas album of all things we are understanding each other again and I love it. Pink and glitter may be a it bit too much big band for me but I know she loves it so I can learn to like I'm sure. A Winter's Carol is from the light princess and I can't wait for that musical. Thank you Tori Xmas is better now.

BEST Ever!

Tori comes back and she's better than ever before! This music is worth its money and great for wintertime. I enjoy it together with "Baltic Chill" and "Baltic Beats" which are great compilations from Europe.

An album that grows on you

As a Tori Amos fan, I was skeptical when I heard that she was releasing a Christmas/Holiday album. While I do agree that "Harps of Gold" is the weakest link on the album (some good ideas, but a bit over the edge for my tastes), on a whole, this album contains some very beautiful interpretations of classic carols. Stand outs include: "What Child, Nowell", "Star of Wonder", "Jeanette, Isabella", "Emmanuel", "Winter's Carol", " Comfort and Joy", "Silent Night, Holy Night", "Good King Wenceslas". Love the arrangement on "Pink and Glitter", very big band. I believe the gripes about Tori hiring a producer, shortening her albums, blah, blah, blah, are just people complaining on a whole about Tori's career, rather than commenting on the quality of this album. Buy a song, see if you like it. 30-second clips don't do justice to the songs. And just because you do a Holiday album doesn't mean you're a sell-out. Was Ella Fitzgerald a sell-out?

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos) was one of several female singer/songwriters who combined the stark lyrical attack of alternative rock with a distinctly '70s musical approach, creating music that fell between the orchestrated meditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics of Joni Mitchell.
