iTunes Review

Patty Griffin has always had the vocal pipes. She has also shown great depth and versatility as a songwriter, able to squeeze emotion to the breaking point without settling for sentimentality. Flaming Red, Griffin’s second album, coming after the guitar and voice of Living With Ghosts, is her attempt to toughen up and try her hand at leading a more conventional and, therefore, commercial enterprise. While those familiar with her quieter and solemn moments will be taken aback by the unapologetic rock guitars that fuel “Tony” (the horror story of a young gay man’s suicide) and “Change,” those buckled in for the wilder ride will find a refreshing energy she rarely attempts anymore. Flaming Red represents an intriguing dimension for this singer-songwriter whose songs covered by the Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride and Reba McEntire have now aligned her with a country-tinged following. The shuffling, country strains of “Goodbye” (which McBride covered) are closer to the performer she’s become. But half the fun here is hearing Griffin toying with something like the adult-contemporary keyboards and guitars of “Carry Me. “ It makes for pleasant surprises.

Another Almost Perfect Album

by SCNYC

At first I thought this album was a bit weak, but after listening to it a few times I've changed my mind. Frankly, I've never heard a bad Patty Griffin album; she is among the most talented singers and songwriters I've heard in years. I'm just blown away by her work and can't get it out of my mind. If you like Patty you must include FLAMING RED as part of your collection. She's that good.

Not what anyone expected--and that was the point

From the opening tourette-like urgency of the title track, "Flaming Red", Griffin signaled to anyone listening that this ride was going to be different. She unapologetically followed her muse and, in my opinion, she produced some of her finest work with this album. While the work may be regarded by some as uneven, it is the sheer power and charisma of Griffin's voice--and the singularity of her vision--that hold everything together here. She blew my mind on first listen, and this album has remained on my desert island disc list ever since. "Tony", "Christina", and "Goodbye" are my recommended samples.

Fabulous!

One of my all time favorites! Every time I hear Tony even after all these years it makes me cry. And Change is a rockin' classic! I know Patty has a following, but overall she is hugely underrated! Don't pass this one by.
