What started life as unlikely political metaphor and beloved children’s tale, L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz became one of Hollywood’s greatest film musical landmarks in 1939, a cultural touchstone that’s spawned a virtually non-stop series of revivals and adaptations ever since, including the 1975 soul romp The Wiz and even a rock-based ‘70s Australian road picture. But Godspell/Pippin composer Stephen Schwartz’s 21st century Broadway musical version comes courtesy of a slightly more obtuse take on Baum’s story: novelist Gregory Maguire’s 1995 revisionist prequel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Schwartz’s shrewd formula of fusing traditional Broadway with MOR pop-rock gives Tony-winner Kristen Chenoweth (in the beefed-up role of Glinda) several star turns, while co-stars Idina Menzel (as the misunderstood title character) and Wizard Joel Grey light up “The Wizard and I” and “A Sentimental Man,” respectively. Its unabashed contemporary Disney sensibilities may rankle traditionalists, but it’s precisely that tone that helped it become such a crowd-pleasing success.

Wow--SO Wicked!
by SaraColoradoThis show was superb! I can't say enough good about this. The story is good, but the music sets it to life. It comes together beautifully and geniously!
"Wicked" is a Broadway Blockbuster
by AlexxxbOne of Broadway's biggest Blockbusters. And one of the best shows to come along in years.
The 'Untold Story of the Witches of Oz' is perfectly performed by its' outstanding cast, led by the incredible Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel.
It's not easy for a show to be laugh-out-loud hilarious and genuinely touching, but "Wicked" succeeds in this department brilliantly.
This recording captures the essence of the show perfectly, but it should be said, that if you're only getting the cast recording and not seeing the show, you're truly missing out. "Wicked" needs to be experienced. It's a wonderful story about true friendship.
Chenoweth and Menzel are the real gems on this recording, each providing full-throttle performances.
Menzel's voice is a true powerhouse, and she really nails every song here. Her Elphaba is fully realized and characterized here due to Menzel's terrific work. Chenoweth, for me, steals the show. Glinda's arc is my favorite part of the show, and Chenoweth is amazing at portraying it. Chenoweth has one of the best voices to ever grace the Broadway stage, and she showcases her awesome pipes here.
Some of the best tracks on this recording are the hilarious and spirited "What is this Feeling?", the stunning opening number "No one Mourns the Wicked", and the excellent "Thank Goodness". But the real deal here is the show-stopper "Defying Gravity" and the amazingly heartfelt "For Good". These two songs alone make the album worth a purchase.
"Wicked" is must-see Broadway, plain and simple. And this recording of the original cast is truly a must-have. Featuring knockout performances by stars Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, this album is one you'll listen to over and over. You'll never watch "The Wizard of Oz" the same way again.
