Album Review

Motown is notorious for recycling their catalog as endless hit collections, but The Ultimate Collection is one of the finest series of greatest-hits CDs they have ever assembled. Each disc contains all of the major hits from an artist, plus important B-sides, album tracks, and minor hits. The Marvelettes' entry in the series is no exception to the rule, boasting all their Top Ten pop and R&B hits, not only from their early-'60s heyday but also their late-'60s comeback: "Please Mr. Postman," "Playboy," "Beechwood 4-5789," "Someday, Someway," "Strange I Know," "Don't Mess With Bill," "My Baby Must Be a Magician," "The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game," "When You're Young and in Love." The disc also features a number of smaller hits and B-sides, resulting in a total of 25 tracks. For anyone who wants a definitive hits collection but is hesitant to invest in the double-disc Deliver, The Ultimate Collection is an ideal choice.

Marvelettes Ultimate

With such a great collection, I do expect these recordings to be in ʻStereoʻ, which I know there were many. In the mid 60ʻs, there wasnʻt always a difference between the ʻSingleʻ and the ʻAlbumʻ version. Looks like the same package that BMG was selling 10 yrs ago. With todayʻs technology and availability, the market demands ʻStereoʻ. If you donʻt mind ʻMonoʻ recordings, then this is for you.

This group had it all!! Looks, voices and style. From the upbeat "Please Mr. Postman" to "Forever." They could sell a song with just the mention of the title. The blending of voices is outsatnding. This album will get you up out of your seat or have you poping your fingers. If you are a teen of the sixties, the voice of Gladys Horton will blow you away. This is a must have for your musical collection.

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '60s, '70s

Probably the most pop-oriented of Motown's major female acts, the Marvelettes didn't project as strong an identity as the Supremes, Mary Wells, or Martha Reeves, but recorded quite a few hits, including Motown's first number one single, "Please Mr. Postman" (1961). "Postman," as well as other chirpy...
