Album Review

After the fuzz-rock revivalism of Are You Gonna Go My Way, Lenny Kravitz seems to have settled into a comfortable groove, alternating between early-'70s album rock and early-'70s soul, with the occasional Prince flourish thrown in for good measure. Circus is the weakest of Kravitz's albums, simply because he didn't change his style in a distinctive manner, replicating the sound of Are You Gonna Go My Way instead. To compound his problems, Kravitz kicks off the record with "Rock and Roll Is Dead," a workmanlike rewrite of "Are You Gonna Go My Way" that lacks hooks. However, after one more half-hearted rocker, Circus begins to open up, as Kravitz turns in a series of ballads and lightly psychedelic mid-tempo pop numbers, which prove to be his real strength.

I do not agree with the iTunes write up and it's comparison to "Are You Gonna Go My Way?". Lenny seems to break away from the mold. This is also the last album he wrote before he went FM pop. His best work!!!

First off, what's with the cover. He looks like a drunken guy and thats exactly what he sounds like. I was looking for Brittney Spear's new album (circus) i came to this and i listened to it. The songs are slow, with no rytham. He can not sing. At least the people with electronic changed voices sound good. This just hurts my ears.

I disagree with the Itunes review, this is not one of his worst albums at all, in fact, i don't think he has a bad album. This cd has 2 of my favorite kravitz songs on it, Tunnel Vision, and Rock 'n' Roll is Dead. Tunnel Vision has such a cool feel to it, if you like lenny kravitz, this cd, or at least tunnel vision is a must buy.

There may have been other "retro" rock acts before him, but Lenny Kravitz was one of the first to not be pigeonholed to a single style as he touched upon such genres as soul, funk, reggae, hard rock, psychedelic, folk, and ballads over the years. Born in New York on May 26, 1964 (his mother was actress...
