Album Review

With the exception of "Islands in the Stream," Rogers' chart-topping duet with Dolly Parton, this compilation of the singer's mid-1980s and 1990s work for RCA and Reprise concentrates primarily on...minor hits including "Morning Desire," "The Vows Go Unbroken (Always True to You)," "Tomb of the Unknown Love" and "What About Me?," recorded with Kim Carnes and James Ingram.

Kenny Rogers' Greatest Hit's 1983 - 1993

Don't be put off by the "AMG review" that claims that apart from one track, this album only contains "minor" hit's. Too many people are ready to write off Kenny's material after 1983's "Eyes That See In The Dark" album right the way through to most of his 1990's output.

While the period collected on this CD didn't see quite the same level of success Rogers enjoyed in the 70's through to the mid-1980's with United Artists/Liberty records, the fact remains that most acts in music have not seen the success Rogers had in the ten years this collection spans (infact there are many, many hit's Rogers had in this time that are missing for this album).

These songs were popular the world over. I remember them from my childhood (I originate from England) and actually bought them on the original vinyl with my pocket cash.

These cuts were recorded by Rogers during his time with RCA records and Warner/Reprise, two of which, "Morning Desire" and "Tomb Of The Unknown Love" were produced by the legendry George Martin (the man who produced the vast bulk of The Beatles output in the 60's).

"Buried Treasure" and "Islands In The Stream" are from Rogers 1983 "Eyes That See In The Dark" album, that was produced by The Bee Gees and featured a duet with Dolly Parton.

"Twenty Years Ago" (a top 10 hit in 1986) is probably the most sentimental track here, about looking back through life. Ironically, this song is now 20 years old, so those of us who were too young at the time to remember what life was like 20 years before, now have a better understanding.

I recommend this album to any country music lover or Kenny Rogers fan.

Kenny never fails to impress! EVER!

It took several tries before Kenny Rogers became a star. As a member of the First Edition (and the New Christy Minstrels before that), he shared in some million-sellers, among them "Reuben James" and "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town," an excellent Mel Tillis song about a disabled veteran. But superstardom lay ahead for this Texan, and it arrived in the late '70s. His experience with the two previous pop groups had prepared him well: he knew the easy listening audience was out there, and he supplied...
