iTunes Review

The daughter of a Methodist minister and a former wild child, Tori Amos struggles with the patriarchal world at large and gently rages with her own indulgent fantasies on her third album, 1996’s Boys for Pele. Strong with Kate Bush influenced piano ballads and infused with her own fantastic imagination, Amos settles at her piano and harpsichord and lets it bleed without ever spilling an ounce of blood. Her carefully manicured tunes add strings, a gospel choir, and New Orleans brass to flesh out her idiosyncratic and incredibly personal recountings of a life lived in struggle. There’s an eerie creepiness to these subdued and skewered tunes. “Horses” begins gently and “Blood Roses” flows with a steady pulse until it nears its close and Amos starts to warble defiantly against its tidy gait. The X-rated chorus and haunted house funk of “Professional Widow” brings pause while the orchestrated purr of “Putting the Damage On” explores co-dependent relationships with refreshing frankness. Amos does nothing the easy way, challenging her audience with unconventional approaches to some difficult subjects.

Like nothing else

This is Tori at her finest. Raw, broken, and howling. I have been listening to this album since 1996 and have yet to tire of it. If only she would bring back that marvelous harpsichord to a new album!

One complaint about this version : no "In the Springtime of his Voodoo!" Do yourself a favor and get the CD.

Deep Southern roots

This has to be one of my favorite Tori Amos albums it doesnt lack any substance.. every song is strong, bold and overall has passion unlike some of her other stuff such as the beekeeper, american doll posse and strange little girls... Her other albums such as Under The Pink,Little Earthquake,Boys For Pele are much more RAW and just a feeling that you cannot describe but you feel it.

Best Tori Album Yet

The general critical concensus when this disc was released was that it lacked focus and was self indulgant. This is simply not true at all, although this album is an acquired taste, and I would not recommend anyone who casually wants to dabble in some Tori tunes to buy this. If you want to try Tori out for size buy "Under the Pink." This album delves into a world of the unconscious mind. Tori paints a picture while at the same time tells a story throughout this album. It is truly a masterpiece that was ahead of its time. Tori uses lots of different keyboard instruments in this album: piano, harpsichord, harmonium, and clavichord. Each of these instruments is like adding a new color to a painting, each coming together at the end to give the listener a full picture of the statement Tori is making with this record. However, it requires multiple listenings, and requires active listening. This is not a pop album! This is an art song cycle that will stand the test of time.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos) was one of several female singer/songwriters who combined the stark lyrical attack of alternative rock with a distinctly '70s musical approach, creating music that fell between the orchestrated meditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics of Joni Mitchell.
