Album Review

1984's The Warning proved to be a holding pattern for Seattle's Queensrÿche, offering quality classic metal with lyrics tending to the mystical and occult. The band would soon embark on a massive creative growth spurt, but they seem to be treading water on tracks like "En Force," "Sanctuary," and the pedestrian title cut. Bright spots include the technology nightmare portrayed on "N M 156" and the nine-minute epic "Roads to Madness," where singer Geoff Tate demonstrates all of his incredible range. The album's high point comes with the anthemic "Take Hold of the Flame," which became a monster smash worldwide, especially in Japan.

true awesomeness!!

by MetalPod

This album really didn't wow me the first couple of times I listened to it. Probably because I had already bought (and wore out) copies of 'Empire', 'Mindcrime', and 'Rage For Order'. Picking this one up late, I expected something more along the lines of what I was familiar with. By those standards, I was disappointed. However, with time, and after seeing most of these songs performed live, they grew on me. In fact, they didn't just grow on me, they became favorites! This was when Queensryche was a true power-metal band. The guitars are cutting and precise. The vocals soar. Geoff Tate was such an amazing vocalist in the 80's, too bad he can't hit these notes consistently anymore. Every song is great, but my faves are 'No Sanctuary', 'NM 156', 'Take Hold', and 'Roads To Madness'. 'Prophecy' was recorded during the 'Warning' sessions, but left off. It was later included on the original cd issue of the debut EP. The live version of 'The Lady Wore Black' was recorded in 1994, and features a completely different, stripped down arrangement that works incredibly well. The live version of 'Take Hold' really captures the intensity of the song. What a great album. There are no weak points here, just all that was good about heavy metal in the 80's. Buy this album. For the price, it is a wonderful bargain. A classic.

This is one of my all time favorite abums. No Sanctuary was the first song I heard from these guys, but I think N M 156 has one of the all time best guitar solos I've ever heard. Bought the CD 50 times, now I'll DL, lets see someone steal it from me now HAHA
