iTunes Review

Not content with its songs remaining the same (a screamo debut, doused in artificial sugar to the point of a saccharine overdose), Story of the Year rewrites itself for the better here. The new narrative retains the last record’s grasp of radio-ready hooks, but pads it with a heavier amalgamation of highway-to-hell riffs, hardcore scrappiness, punk rock politicking, and Black Sabbath sludge. By the time “Wake Up the Voiceless” kicks in, expect a noise complaint call from the police.

Customer Reviews

In the wake of determination

Story of the Year has always rocked. Now with this new album they are just getting better. This album combines their awesome style with the style that's in. Unlike "Sidewalks" these new songs have a more hard core edge to them. THIS ALBUM ROCKS!

Harder, Faster, Better

I looked foward to this album for months, I absolutly loved their first album. Page Avenue in my mind is the best piece of modern rock of our era. I and found it hard to believe that they could top themselves with this album but SOTY definatly blew me away with their matured musical talent. In the Wake of Determination far surpasses Page Avenues musically, their guitarist have definatly stepped it up on In the Wake of Determination. And the vocals still kick a**. But just to let the people out there that thought that Page Avenue was as far as they could go on the Screamo Meter, im warning you now its alot harder and faster rock. But dont let that stop you from buy this wicked awsome album because I promise you'll love it.

BAD CD!!!

This cd is horrible. I own the first cd so don't think I'm just a soty basher, I love page avenue, but this cd is garbage. I did not find one part of any of these songs to be entertaining and I listened to each song in it's entirety. Here's the breakdown:

Lyrics: boring, forced, and simple rhyming scheme: don't expect much

Music variety: every song sounds the same

Music value: The songs are simply put together with expected cord changes and garage grunge all around feel. simple chugging for every guitar lic.

Vocals: bland vocals sounding like rage against the machine wannabes. Little to no harmonizing throughout.

Overall message behind songs: Every song talks about rising up except for the last song which talks about laying down what people believe in. hypocritical in the same cd... bravo.

hopefully this review won't get deleted like the last one. Don't buy the cd, it's a waste of money.

Biography

Formed: 1995 in St. Louis, MO

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Story of the Year took root in the late '90s under a different name, Big Blue Monkey, in St. Louis, MO. At the time of its inception, the band's sound was much heavier (think Deftones), and the lineup that would become Story of the Year was not yet in place. Big Blue Monkey played frequent shows in the St. Louis area, issued several EPs, and endured the lineup fluctuations typical to any struggling combo. Creative and persistent self-promotion caught the ear of producer John Feldmann, who in turn...
