iTunes Review
Marilyn Manson’s shock value tends to cloud perceptions of his musicality and intelligence. His music is imbued with the celebratory darkness and glam of Alice Cooper and David Bowie. His passion is palpable, wrapped in layers of dense metal guitar and industrial tones. For The High End of Low Manson regains the spirit of his late ‘90s period when he was public enemy #1. “Arma-goddamn-m**********n-Geddon” and “We’re From America” is Marilyn at his subversive best, exposing society’s hypocrisy and depravity. “I Want to Kill You Like They Do In the Movies” and “Pretty as a Swastika” add to Manson’s catalog of anti-love songs. Manson’s band — keyboardist Chris Vrenna, drummer Ginger Fish, and bassist Twiggy Ramirez (back in after a long hiatus) — operate on "blast-first ask-questions-later" marching orders. It’s the most raw and aggressive Marilyn Manson has sounded in years. No, Manson won't have to go door-to-door to shock people, as lampooned by The Onion; The High End of Low serves that purpose just fine.

Failed
I think both Manson and his fan base had quite a bit riding on the follow up to the flat and universally unappealing Eat Me, Drink Me. After all, even the most devoted of fans were left scratching their heads at Manson's the failed attempt to deconstruct himself. The true genius of Manson's music in the past was a seamless integration of though provoking lyrics with layered music. Unfortunately, The High End of Low is both lyrically and musically boring. The Manson of yore conceptualized each move, and made each album as interesting to hear as watch. Liner notes were splashed with messages or hidden codes, lyrics were simultaneously open-ended and precise and the music was the kind you wanted to break s**t to. . . each album was an experience, a prize you shared with others of like mindedness. These days, however, the age on Manson's house of horrors is not only showing, it's getting a bit silly. But I suppose expecting a revival from a drunk is a little much to ask, and just incase you haven't been keeping up, it seems Manson has quite the affinity for booze. Listening to the musical and lyrical wreckage of this album, I can't help but feel a bit cheated. I'm not usually one to get their hopes up and hype an new album, but unknowingly, I did just that. I truly believed in the back of my empty little head Manson had finally gotten himself together and was ready to rerelease his hell on our world and give us all something to really rock to. Unfortunately . . . again . . . falls flat on his plain white face. The good news is if he's half as plastered as he sounds, he won't even feel it.
It takes a few listens to appreciate
When I first heard this album a couple of weeks back I was a little let down as well. I felt the album had no identity at all although the songs did flow, they just didn't seem "manson" to me. I guess I was expecting so much more since Manson had said this would be his hardest album ever.
Today after hearing it dozens of times, I have to say that the Manson we all have in our heads is gone. People grow and they change, and we cannot let that fact sour our opinion of the music. This album is the best he has done since Holywood IMO and it has some of the strongest song writing of ANY band out there today.
Running To The Edge Of The World is a song that is screaming to be a radio hit and a stadium anthem for Manson. I wasn't expecting a song like that to ever come from him and it has qucikly become one of my favorite Manson songs ever.
I can understand the initial shock of it not being what we wanted it to be, but after thinking about it these songs are better than 99% of the trite out there (Nickelback anyone?) and deserves respect from people who love good music.
Give the guy a break...
Alright. I'm a Manson fan. I love Holy Wood as much as the next guy, but saying that all his new albums are bad because they're not like the Trilogy is ignorant. You are not a true Manson fan by saying this. The reason WHY he gained fame with his fans is BECAUSE he changes his style constantly. Musician's have a right to change their style and expand their artistic genius. Without comparing this to any album from the Trilogy, its pretty darn good. He has a lot of incredibally strong moments in the album...I mean seriously? Listen to Running at the Edge of the World. Listen to Into the Fire. Just because his music isn't "angry" (which I never thought it was) anymore, doesn't mean its not amazing. Before he would examine the world around him and in a satirical manner, comment on them. Now, he's gone through different relationship's and his heart has gone on its own little journey, so thats what inspires him to write his music. Its not a bad thing. And for those who like him just because of his "shocking" tendencies, I'm sure he won't disappoint =) I mean just listen to Pretty as a ($) and notice that "($)" is his new "logo..." I'm sure he'll get drilled for that...
