iTunes Review
Easily one of the best singer-songwriters of his generation, Rufus Wainwright exceeds his debut album's promise with Poses, his 2001 sophomore release. This time, he deepens his exceptional command of classically influenced melody while adding greater lyrical nuance. Poses presents Wainwright's unique mixture of boyish innocence and urbane sophistication in an array of pop and rock settings. From the harmony-bathed rush of "California" to the piano-driven bounce of "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk," he ascends his gorgeously wrought tunes with near-operatic grace. His special forte is slow flowing Spanish rhythms, as evidenced in the evocative title track. Rufus is equally adept at outside material. He fills Loudin Wainwright III"s "One Man Guy" with gentle self-mockery, while his version of the Beatles' "Across the Universe" shimmers with yearning. Producer Pierre Marchand surrounds Wainwright with tracks elegantly rococo in spots, cleanly rendered in others. It all combines to make Poses a work of rare artistry and sly charm.

This Album Will Stay With You Forvever...
This album is increasingly better after each time you listen to it. Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk got me interested in Wainwright, and the awe hasnt left me since i started listening. Wainwright truly has a voice that couldnt better show the tone of his music. The Consort & Grey Gardens are beautiful tracks they simply touch the heart with an energy of sorts. I highly reccomend all of his music.
These are just a couple of my cravings
The first intro I got to Rufus was from a friend. She gave me the CD and it sat neglected in my backpack for about a month. But I remember pulling it out, popping it in, and sitting entranced for almost an hour. I couldn't move away from the CD player. Something about the incredibly odd backup harmonies and the tone of his voice just captivated me. And unlike most bands, which get annoying after a while, I just kept listening to this CD over and over again. I still do, almost a year later. The best way to describe it is Chicken soup. Despite the slightly depressing mood sometimes set, Rufus never fails to make you feel better, no matter the problem. I give this album 5 stars for superior song-writing abilities, and the ability to produce almost every sound on this CD by himself.
6 Good Songs......Not Bad
A bit skeptical by the overly enthusiastic posted reviews, I tried to listen objectively. This is without a doubt a great collection of tunes with only a few misses. Some lyrics can be a bit pretentious in structure but at least he doesn't lack ambition. The overly recorded "Across the Universe" suits Rufus well however he repeats the "nothing's gonna change my world" verse three too many times which has me anxiously reaching for the skip button. "Shadows" and "Evil Angel" are a little hard to sit through. My hat's off to Rufus for turning out 6 good songs on this album (hardcore Rufus fans probably cringing thinking they're all good). "Greek Song" is one of the most original catchy songs I've heard in a while. My top song picks for this album are:
1. Greek Song (weird lyrics but great song)
2. Poses (sounds sad but in a good way)
3. California (Great song for cleaning the house)
4. Grey Gardens (Good movie soundtrack-sounding song)
5. The Tower of Learning (sounds like a wise song)
6. Rebel Prince (Sounds like a show tune)
Great mix of Adult Contemporary and Indie, Folk, Alternative genres.
