An important staple of the genre, David Moufang hardly needs an introduction. If you aren’t familiar with the name David Moufang, maybe you have heard of one or more of his other projects: Deep Space Network, Earth to Infinity, Reagenz, Koolfang, Conjoint, and of course Move D. The labels he has released material for read like a who’s who of ambient music: FAX, Instinct, Reflective, Source, Rising High, Beyond, Elektrolux, Astralwerks, Warp and many more. One of the most prolific Silent Records artists, he is arguably best known for his many releases for FAX Records, however, his releases with Jonas Grossmann under the name Deep Space Network and his material released on his very own Source Records make a valid argument. He has recorded with Pete Namlook, Jonah Sharp, Dr. Atmo, Thomas Meniecke, Bobbi Bird of Higher Intelligence Agency and more! Born and raised in Heidelberg, Germany, and influenced by Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and “2001: A Space Odyssey” it is easy to see why David Moufang became the influential artist he is today. Before recording his special brand of ambient techno, David spent time playing drums and guitar as well as spinning electro, funk and jazz as a DJ in Germany. When he walked into the Milk Club (a dance club in Mannheim) during a Techno night, Moufang first heard Detroit techno, and he immediately became a committed clubber and soon after changed his nickname to Move D. In The Spotlight: The Vita Ruins | With their chainsaw guitars, atmospheric overtones, and sultry vocal track, The Vita Ruins are a band that should gain attention with their debut release, A Day Without A Name. After picking up shows around the DC area and finally taking it to the studio, we’re left with 11 fresh tracks that produce a balance of euphoria and disdain, assertion and reflection, highs and lows. The Vita Ruins were formed in 2005 by Greg Balleza (Guitars, Bass, Keyboards and Vocals) and Tim Kratzer (Vocal, Guitars, Bass and Keyboards). The two have been the glue behind the sound as they’ve collaborated with other artists the past few years, and had built their own recording studio in 2007. Since then, they have carried their music live at venues such as The Black Cat and 9:30 Club. The Vita Ruins have been labeled ‘indie music’, but create their own elements that give it a more experimental appeal. ‘A Day Without A Name’ gives us some insight on what direction The Vita Ruins are going. The album is easy to grasp with common guitar hooks and basic drum patterns that forms the base that’s easy to put your foot on. However, it delves into a more complex realm as you keep listening. ‘Godspeed To That Polytheist’ opens the album nicely, and radiates enough ambiance to attract intrigue while not giving away too much. ‘Seven Suns’ is undeniably the most radio-friendly song on the album, with its upbeat, simple, and catchy nature. As the album progresses though, we see a sudden turn of events as the album dives into Greg and Tim’s more intimate side. The guitar is virtually scrapped, while it steers towards abstraction. ‘Griggs’ Diagnosis’ produces an exotic landscape that possibly deters the band from their indie rock label. It ends with ‘Bad Dream’ a somber ballad that remains hopeful, and leaving the album off on a high note. Overall, A Day Without A Name flows well and the songs mend together for a blissful listening experience. There are times when the vocals sound similar song-by-song, but the instrumentation varies enough to give each song its own platform to roam. Album Review: Fort Knox Recordings-The New Gold Standard 2 | Written by Joe Lambert I wish I were funky. Scratch that–I wish I were funk-ay. Sadly, the only beats I drop are ones at the grocery store, and the only hip shakin’ I pull off is when its 20 degrees outside. The New Gold Standard 2–Fort Knox Recordings’ new compilation album featuring a bunch of artists you’ve probably never heard, but should quickly get yourself acquainted with–is this year’s number one reason to get off the couch and onto a dance floor, particularly one with myriad flashing lights. With a song titled “Make Ya Dance,” it’s clear what this label, and its artists, are aiming for: getting people to “open up and live.” As a very popular character said in a once very popular television show called Futurama, “What’s goin’ on? That rhythm, it’s doin’ somethin’ to my human butt.” Listening to The Gold Standard is a lot like that sentiment, your human butt starts shaking, and the only cure is to dance. The level of cohesion found within this compilation is truly astounding, though. Each artist inhabits a completely different style, but every song has a pinch of sound from the last, and segues beautifully into the next, requiring (not to this reviewer’s complaint) multiple listens. It’s hard not to compare the artist’s, trying to figure which has the most impact, which makes you want to dance the most, which makes you think the most while you’re dancing. Aside from the sonic gold that is Fort Knox Five, International Velvet has the most potential out of all these acts. Listening to “Sitargazer” is like taking a trip back to The Chemical Brothers’ heyday, then adding a sitar to the mix, and a whole lot more savoir-faire. His other track on the album, “Sundown,” throws Beatles pop structures, that sweet sitar, some smooth R& B vocals, and a dance track into the mix producing one rockin’ pastiche of sound. Sure, the song borrows heavily from the Beck canon, but 15 years after Odelay, who doesn’t borrow from the Beck canon? Really, there’s so much funk going down on every track that it’s impossible to capture it all. Speedy Consuela’s voice is like satin threaded into big band horns, with a Latin kick. And if the Latin flavor’s what your looking for, skip over to Empresarios for a genuinely thrilling blend of classic and contemporary. If your musical taste buds aren’t piqued by that point, skip straight to Liftoff’s seriously spacey track, “Marshmeadows.” Think Animal Collective meets The Album Leaf meets LCD Soundsystem meets Starman-era David Bowie–and yeah, it’s a good combination. Seriously, this label’s got the world music meanderings on lock-down. I can tell I’ve started to sound a bit like an info-mercial promoting the latest comp album from Fort Knox, so I’ll just let the music speak for itself: Get up and dance, even if you don’t know how. About Fort Knox Five Sounding like a cosmic by product of George Clinton, Sly & The Family Stone, and Public Enemy, the Fort Knox Five are a live force to be reckoned with, and as in-demand remixers and producers, they’ve worked with artists ranging from Afrika Bambaataa to Bittersweet, Kraak & Smaak to Tito Puente and Bob Marley & the Wailers (sanctioned by the Marley estate, a rare honour). The Fort Knox Five are internationally renowned DJs and were selected by Gwen Stefani for her “Harajuku Lovers” tour with Black Eyed Peas. murmur DC Podcast: Episode 9 – Peteone | This week’s murmur DC podcast comes from Peteone and his live set at 88’s The Electric Cabaret on October 22, 2009. Even though he is a new face to the Washington, DC area, his presence has already been felt. Born in Poland, Pete is a Chicago based DJ, Producer, Promoter, and host of his own radio show – “Weekly Record Check”. These roles have allowed him to gain experience and insight in the world of electronic dance music. As a DJ, his style of music can best be described as a mix of deep and sexy tech-house. He’s particularly known for reading the crowd during his sets and directing his music towards his audience while feeding off their energy. With a decade of experience under his belt, Pete strives to make each set unique by combining current EDM trends with quality and nostalgic beats of the past. While growing up in Europe during the early 90’s, he discovered EDM and was intrigued by the revolutionary sounds of artists such as The Prodigy, Orbital, and Chemical Brothers just to name a few. DJs like Sasha, John Digweed or Richie Hawtin known as Plastikman at the time also played a huge part in influencing his early musical taste. In 2000, Pete moved to Chicago and was able widen his horizons after discovering the Chicago house scene. As most beginners, he played a lot of house parties and small club gigs. In 2005, he was featured on the energy 92.7 FM radio station and introduced himself to a much wider audience. Building on this momentum, the following year was a breakthrough for his DJ career as he became part of AMP Productions. Peteone worked as a promoter and gained the recognition of his peers on the local scene. Soon after, he landed a monthly residency at the world-renowned Vision Nightclub in Chicago. Dj gigs came rolling in after that, and he played in clubs all over the city such as VISION, SPYBAR, and other venues. He was also featured on numerous radio stations like PROTON, FRISKY, XTC RADIO, and WNUR 89.3FM In 2007, him and a few of his fellow DJ partners started kontrollmusic, an electronic music promotion agency. Towards the end of that year, Pete found a renewed passion in recent electronic releases and decided to voice this interest by creating a radio show. This led to the Weekly Record Check, which broadcasted for the first time on September 25th, 2008. The idea was to create a live independent online radio show that would feature the best current tracks in electronic music. After airing the first 8 episodes near the end of 2008, the show immediately obtained international recognition and gained fans throughout the world. JustQualityMusic is both podcast and radio station I-Tunes approved – continuously growing fan database, currently with over 2000 live listeners 4000+ downloads of the podcast every week! Pete has recently started working at the world renowned Gramaphone Records in Chicago and has been welcomed to join their family with open arms. As his fans can attest, Pete is an open minded person with a great sense of direction and a continuous desire to learn new methods. He strives to reflect perfection in his work and has dedicated 100% of his time towards attaining his goals. His ambitions have taken him a long way since he first started in the industry and his passion only keeps growing. A world class globe-trotting DJ, a recording artist, a sought-after remix producer, and head of his own record label, Saeed Younan has excelled as a true artist in the global dance scene. Without showing complacency, Saeed Younan does not cease to amaze, always looking to astound. As a DJ, Saeed’s performances are renowned for his technical abilities and precision. He effortlessly weaves and morphs tracks together into a seamless blend of house, progressive and techno, enhancing his music into a warm and sexy vibe. All the while building momentum by allowing the music to ebb and swell.
