Without question, the best shopping list app in the store

I do most of the grocery shopping for my family of four, and this application is an absolute godsend.

I'll start by warning you that this review won't be a very short one. The reason for that, though, is (as more than one reviewer has already noted) this app itself isn't a simplistic one.

Notice I said it's not simplistic. That doesn't mean Shopping List isn't simple. I share most people's dislike for overly-complicated apps which slow down the very workflow they're supposed to be assisting or speeding up. Simple is good. But, to me, simple apps are ones where the designer obviously put a great deal of thought into the end-user experience, trying to imagine not only what they themselves might like to see in such an app, if they were in the market for one, but also what other people who might have wants or needs very different from their own might want in such an app. It takes a lot of thought - and a lot of skill - for a developer to design an app which allows those users who do NOT think like they do to be able to feel comfortable and also like the app works well with their own way of doing things. The mark of a truly great app is one in which a deceptively uncluttered, simple interface masks a great deal of power and flexibility “under the hood.” And that's exactly what Shopping List brings you.

I disagree with some of the earlier reviewers who suggested that this app is not intuitive, or not easy to use; I think it is both those things. It isn't as easy to use as, say, a text editor, but that's because a text editor has one function: editing text. Any application which has to be flexible enough to be able to be customized by each user to work within their particular personal workflow will require some initial set-up and understanding. But once you've taken a small amount of time to learn what you can do with Shopping List, it is quite simple to use. And if you set it up to function the way you function when you shop, it more than pays off down the road.

Yes, this application takes longer than thirty seconds to learn to use effectively. But there is a well laid-out manual in six(!) languages at the application website which explains very clearly how to create the groupings and lists you want in Shopping List. Unless you're the type of person who eats all your meals out, or only buys the same exact items every time you go to the store, a shopping list is something that you have to make, in one form or another, at least once a week, like most people. And since nearly everyone has to do it, there are almost as many different WAYS to do it – to create and organize shopping lists - as there are people.

And that's precisely where Shopping List is at its strongest: it offers nearly unlimited flexibility for you, the shopper, to tailor your own lists, favorite stores, and even reports on shopping history in whatever way suits YOU best. If you're the kind of person who doesn't really care what you spend and only need to write things down so you can remember them and be able to cross them off once you get to the store, you can do that. If you want to be able to plan your route (if you have to go to more than one store), or be able to see what you're spending on a monthly or weekly basis – even broken down on a store-by-store basis, you can do that just as easily. If you're the detail oriented-type of person who breaks things down by category, sub-category, and sub-sub category, this app is for you, and it doesn't force you to use pre-established categories or groups. You create what works for YOU.

I actually believe – again, counter to at least one previous reviewer – that not having the lists pre-populated with various items and categories is tremendously beneficial, for two main reasons: first (and most obvious), you don't have to spend time going through dozens of categories which were set up by someone else, deleting things you'll never need, buy or use, and then STILL having to re-input many of the items you WILL buy and use. But equally importantly, having a pre-populated list can truncate your own thinking about how you would organize such a list to serve you best. If you're like me, if something's already been done for you, even if it hasn't been done exactly the way you'd do it yourself, you'll probably tend at least partially to use what's already there just because....it's already there. But in Shopping List, with no pre-defined groups, items, categories or anything else, you have to stop and think about how best to make this app work for you. And once you've done that, it's magic....and not only will you never want to go shopping without it again, you will wonder how you ever lived without it in the first place.

Very Nice!

I had been using the notepad for lists.. this is so much better! It's easy to enter items -- once you've typed them in the first time, just select them from the list every time after that. It's easy to check them off. It keeps track of what you spent. I have only taken it through the store once so far, but supposedly it will organize lists according to the order you tend to check them off in (so that you can move through the store more quickly), and I am looking forward to that.
The developer is releasing updates quickly and is responsive to questions.

It just takes some getting used to

I really like this little app. I like that you can save all of the items you regularly buy and just add which you need now to the current list...as opposed to typing out each item every time. I also like that it associates your items to stores. I contacted the developer with some suggestions and they said they would be in the next update, very helpful! What i asked for was a way to manually associate an item to a store, and to add a store address (instead of locate me). after the update i'm sure it would get 5 stars from me!
