Description

SignalScope turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a powerful real-time spectrum analyzer and oscilloscope. Easily measure audible frequencies in SignalScope’s Spectrum tab. “Touch” your data with highly interactive, multi-touch enabled analyzer displays. See http://youtube.com/faberast for video demos.

NOTE: The frequency response of the iPhone's built-in and headset microphones is quite flat. However, the built-in microphone of the original iPhone seems to be routed through a codec, which limits the sample rate to 8 kHz and significantly affects the frequency response. The iPhone 3G rolls off the built-in and headset mic signals below 100 Hz.

NOTE: iPod touch devices require additional external hardware to get audio signals into SignalScope.

For iPhone/iPod touch audio I/O compatibility and frequency response measurements, visit http://blog.FaberAcoustical.com.

FEATURES
- Analyze signals coming from the iPhone's built-in or headset microphone, or from the built-in accelerometer.
- Sample the built-in or headset microphone at 48 kHz, and the accelerometer at 100 Hz (the built-in microphone sample rate is limited to 8 kHz on first-generation iPhones).
- Zoom in or out on spectrum and waveform displays with two-finger expand/pinch gestures, even while the analyzer is running.
- Pan vertically or horizontally in zoomed displays with two-finger scrolling.
- Pinpoint individual sample values or frequencies with a cursor.
- Save high-resolution spectrum or waveform display images to the iPhone's Camera Roll photo album.

If you're looking for a whole and 1/3-octave spectrum analyzer (traditional RTA), engineering units, input calibration, a built-in signal generator, and data acquisition (saving acquired time and/or frequency data to text or .mat files), check out the new SignalScope Pro for iPhone and iPod touch.

What's New in Version 1.4.1

The cursor value is displayed with the proper precision when the built-in accelerometer is the current input device (frequency resolutions down to 0.1 Hz are supported, but only integer resolution was being displayed).

Finally a convenient acoustics tool!

This is a great app. As an acoustic engineer I can't tell you how many times I've wanted something just like this! It is great when I am trying to analyze something and just need to find out what frequency a sound is and I don't have to run and grab a handheld analyzer and wait the 3 minutes for it to start up. The save to the camera roll is a really nice feature too!

iTunes game me a little trouble downloading it but once they got that fixed everything went fine.

Who needs the phone mic?

I am another error -206 victim. I reinstalled iTunes, rebooted, etc. Glad to see it isn't just me. The app can work from the built in mic or the external headset mic, so probably a good mic could be used. Not everyone needs an audio FFT up to 22khz. I am most intrigued by the power spectrum coming from the accelerometer. That is a pretty unique measurement device, I wonder if it can track 50hz or faster...

Update: The problem with downloading was fixed. The audio spectrum is up to 4kHz, the accelerometer is up to 50Hz. Program runs well, it costs too much for a game that will be boring after a month, but for a powerful and useful tool... it is a bargain.

Software with Potential

I do not understand why there are such negative reviews for this application. The software is an acceptable waveform anazyler, obviously not a replacement for research quality instrumentation but sufficient for general applications.

Individuals who are posting negative reviews need to be further educated on limitations of using phones for advanced operations and should not compare the quality of iPhone applications to PC based equivalents.

If you are interested in the software, I would recommend it.
