Customer Reviews
Nice game play but some annoyances.
The reason I picked EA's Sudoku instead of the 14 other Sudokus on the App Store was because I was banking on an experienced game developer. But it seems my faith was misplaced. Game play in Sudoku by EA is well done, but the overall implementation has some major annoyances.
First is the animation splash. Why must we watch this every time we start or restart the game? Just let me skip it with a double tap. (Read the Apple iPhone Human Interface Guidelines). Also the volume of this animation is way too loud on my headphones and there's no way on my iPod touch to turn it down.
Second, I can't listen to my own music on my iPod Touch while playing the game. This is easy to accomplish in other programs. EA needs to learn to share the audio.
Third, the number buttons are a bit small and it's too easy to hit the wrong number and get penalized. Either provide some feedback as to what number you are hitting before it gets entered (a la the iPhone keyboard) or make these buttons bigger. (Apple recommends buttons be 44x44).
Also the Options panel is buggy. The sound settings don't seem to work much of the time. Did anyone test this?
Oh and the support URLs (http://www.support.eamobile.com/) in the iTunes App Store are broken. One takes you to a 404. And the other takes you to a strange unfinished website for EA Mobile which asks you which carrier and phone model you have, none of which is iPhone or iPod Touch.
EA needs to fix these annoyances, and then this will certainly be the best Sudoku on the iPhone/iPod Touch.
Nice gameplay, but annoying startup
The good news: I have tried several different iPhone Sudoku clones and when it comes down to gameplay, the EA version is hands-down the best experience around. You can get what you want done with minimal clicking. The other sudoku games often make me feel like the UI is getting in the way (I'm used to pen-and-paper sudoku), and EA's feels more natural.
The bad news: The little video you have to sit through at launch. It's about 13 seconds long and gets displayed every time you launch the application. Not only that, but the video has sound that cannot be disabled in the game settings or by the vibrate switch's position. I realize that 13 seconds isn't that long of a time, but when it comes to casual games, every second counts. If I only have a minute to fill in a few numbers, do I want to waste a quarter of that waiting for the app to load? Other games I have no problem jumping in and out of without question, but one with that long of a load time makes me pause to ponder if I want to sit through that video again. And if I am in an environment where sound is out of the question (e.g. meeting, lecture, etc.) then the decision has been made for me. I just can't launch the app.
Great Gameplay - But No Music :-(
After playing EA's Sudoku on the iPod for the past year and greatly enjoying it, I figured the iPhone version was a no-brainer. While the game maintains the same gameplay and interface (very slick!), the iPhone version has one major annoyance: You cannot listen to your own music while playing the game!
This is rather frustrating when riding public transit and such and you'd like some music to mute annoying background noise.
