Description

Molecules is an application for viewing three-dimensional renderings of molecules and manipulating them using your fingers. You can rotate the molecules by moving your finger across the display, zoom in or out by using two-finger pinch gestures, or pan the molecule by moving two fingers across the screen at once. Double-tapping on the display lets you switch visualization modes.

New molecules can be downloaded from the RCSB Protein Data Bank (http://www.rcsb.org/pdb), an international repository of biological molecules and their 3-D structures. Molecules can be downloaded directly to your iPhone or iPod touch and stored there for later viewing.

Custom molecular structures can also be downloaded to the device from any publicly available web server. The location of these structures can either be manually specified in the application or custom URLs can be clicked on within Safari or Mail on the device. For more details, please visit our website.

Molecules is a BSD-licensed open source project.

What's New in Version 1.3.2

Rendering performance has been significantly improved. A faster, relevance-based keyword search is now used for the Protein Data Bank. Molecules can now continually animate about their vertical axis. Several reported crashes have been fixed. Slight interface improvements have been made.

Not ready yet. But an important app!

Five stars for writing this, one star for current functionality, average is three! This could be incredibly useful to people interested in macromolecular structure. Right now (even with the anticipated connectivity corrections in v1.1) it doesn't provide enough.
Needed immediately: Ribbon diagrams (to simplify the picture). Selection of chains id's (to handle pdb files with multiple chains). Needed mid-term: Click to identify residues. Different types of coloring (e.g. from N -> C terminus of proteins).
Those additions would make this program a really nice, if basic, tool (no need to have the functionality of something like PyMOL (yet), but programs like PyMOL might provide a good reference point).

Nice package...needs ribbon!

It's a great app for educators like myself. App is solid and manipulation is so intuitive...much better than any full featured professional apps i've used! My only wish is that it would not default to ball/stick mode...a simple toggle for ribbon diagrams would make this much more educational and an absolute must-have for any chemistry/biochemistry Prof.

Help, I Need caffeine

no seriously, how could they not include one of the most fundamental molecules in human experience.
Anyone know the PDB code for Caffeine?
