Decent Mobile Football Game; Misleading Description

I was a little nervous about spending $9.99 on the game without having a chance to try it first, but it turns out it was an overall good purchase. The game offers great gameplay, making good use of the iPhone's control capabilities. During play, you have an on-screen d-pad and two buttons (A and B). The d-pad controls movement, tapping any direction twice will cause the player to sprint. The A and B buttons are for shooting and passing, respectively. Holding buttons longer or using gestures in combination with a button tap cause the player to use variations of the actions, such as a lob shot or a through pass. While dribbling, the player can perform tricks by tapping on the screen or using gestures. There is a training mode which helps learn the controls.

The AI seems to be a little stupid on the easiest difficulty setting, but at least the goalkeeper doesn't make it too easy to score. My only real gripe with this game is the misleading description: based on the claim of 198 fully licensed teams, I would have expected the top leagues to have real club and team names, but this only seems to be the case for Spain. Some national teams might have real player names, too, but a quick check revealed that at least the German, English, French and Italian leagues don't use real club names, player names and club logos. However, the fake names and logos used are very similar to the original names and logos, so it is still very enjoyable.

Deep, fluid gameplay with tons of options.

This is my first full price app. Here's the quick breakdown: I am totally surprised at the all around depth of this game. Very smooth, fluid animations create a great sense of flow to the game. That's the most important thing to nail but then the controls are extremely simple yet end up getting pretty deep. For instance in the beginning you'll pass and shoot on offense and press on defense. Eventually you'll be leading guys with your lob passes, setting up one-timers, doing a few dekes (the important moves are all there and easy to pull off), switching defensive players and slide tackling, sprinting, faking shots, and rushing the goal keeper among other moves.

The cool part is how simple it all is. For instance a regular pass is done by tapping or holding the B button, depending on the strength behind the kick. (the strength of the kick also determines how far you lead your man) For a lob pass you push B and drag your thumb up, to lead a lob pass you press B and drag your thumb left. A regular shot is A and a lob shot is A and then draging your thumb up, a fake shot is A and dragging your thumb right.

The A.I. in the game has been pretty solid overall. Very aggressive making you move the ball around alot on harder difficulties but it's a good challenge though there are some rare moments of stupid bad goal keeping it's not very frequent.

So the gameplay has depth, but what about team management and the coaching that goes on behind the scenes? As expected you can substitute players in and out, I have fun slide tackling goal keepers (I know how old that move is but it still makes me laugh) so I get a lot of red cards and need to sub out a lot. The thing is each player is rated in about 10-20 areas! And below the ratings in a synopsis of their strengths such as "Good Passer" or "Curve King". But what really blew me away was the formations. Again, it's not too surprising that you can pick from about 15 different formations. But what is surprising is you can go in from there and fully retune your formation manually. You adjust it so your players will play anywhere on the field touch and dragging their dot around. Green dots are defense, blue are mid field, and red are attack so it's easy enough to know who should be on what portion of the field. You can also adjust how aggressive or defensive you want your team to play while in these formations.

As for features there's a training mode which will take you through most of the moves and lets you do a free practice at your own rate, there's a league mode where you can play a season to earn one of 6 different trophies, a cup mode where you can take part in playoffs to earn one of 6 other trophies, a penalty kick mode, a place to view all your trophies, and an exhibition mode.

Options are pretty packed too: weather, match length, difficulty, time of day, time rules (no extra time, extra time and penalty kick, golden goal, or silver goal) volume, stadiums (12 total), and teams (a ton I don't know the actual number) are all adjustable prior to starting an exhibition. In cups and leagues you only choose your team, time limit, and difficulty the rest is preset.

Once in a league or cup there's modest stat tracking (players with the most goals, assists, and "Best Players") and a overall rankings board to check out. At the end of games the stat tracking is pretty good though but I guess it's erased afterwards.

The game sounds like soccer, there aren't a ton of things to listen to but crowd chants, the popular "goooaalll", and sound effects are all in place.
The game looks fantastic too. As I mentioned it's very smooth, you can adjust the camera angle, character models are somewhat blocky but that doesn't interefere at all with the gameplay, but there are impressive features like instant replay. Basically literally whatever happened in the last five seconds you can rewatch, zoom in, slow down, and pan the camera up or down or left or right. You can't save the replays however. The other funny thing about the game is that Gameloft decided to make the post goal celebration an event where all attackers and mid fielders go into a corner and keep raising their arms facing the crowd and at the end of the half or game-no matter who wins-players walk into the locker room like zombies from Dead Rising. Now that sounds like a complaint but it has no effect on gameplay and is honestly kinda funny so I like it. The important thing is the players models look nice when playing the game and that it flows very smooth, That's a sweet accomplishment.

What can you say? This game is packed with content and options, reply value, the gameplay is deep and fluid, and has great presentation (that won't eat your battery too fast). The next update will online wi-fi multiplayer which can infinitely expand replay value. If they keep games of this calibur at $10 or less I'll be a big iPod Touch/iPhone gamer soon.

A must have...
